'Straight' Competition

The only comp. I have fished which was inherently 'Straight' (or as straight as you can get),was in the early 70's at Seaham - I think it was advertised as 'The Big One'

It was used as a communications exercise by the T.A. and there was a squaddie with a radio placed at intervals right along the boundaries.

If you caught a fish, the onus was on you to take it to the soldier where he estimated its weight, cut it (to prevent it being weighed twice) and radioed your details and that of the fish to H.Q./weigh-in.

If you turned-up at the weigh-in with a fish that had not been reported in this way the the fish was disallowed.

Not totally foolproof but as good as you can get.

We shown our ages now, I can remember fishing in that comp & seeing the soldiers with their camoflage uniforms & big radio's for sending the catch info.
I think I fished at seaham that day & blanked.
Certainly stopped any cheats.

are you sure you're not talking about the vaux open in the 80's, thats exactly how we used to run it but it was the sea cadets we used to record everyones fish and score the tail to prevent it being recorded twice. worked well.

that was when ken fox used to run the comps i was talking to him the other month he was the king of organising the comps.

Ill tell you what lads. It comes to something when you have to get the army in to stop people cheating in a fishing competition. I thought they where just for wars and stuff

aye remember that very well indeed it was anglers responsibility to find a steward and get their fish checked , it was 1982 and stiil got the photograph with the mayor of sunderland presenting me with the heaviest fish prize for a cod of 3lb 14oz, sorry for putting extra info in but thats was me 15 minutes of fame and all a got to brag about done nowt else in opens.

as far as cheating goes a dont believe its the main prizes at risk as most of the opens are won anglers that are known an been seen catching their fish at popular marks .

if any cheating is going on, a think its done by people who fish less popular marks and got no chance of the bigger prizes cos (THEIR SH*T ) and so sometimes may possibly pool a couple of fish

so maybe tha answer is cut the boudries down a touch, and the members of said clubs running the open could do the stewards job at lesser popular marks and therefore cutting out any doubt about cheating cos as said before at the popular marks there are nearly always quite a few anglers at the well known marks and normally see wats caught and how many times with use of the mobile phones most angler hear wat getting caught throught out the match

Definitely not 'The Vaux Open', although I remember that one as well.

The one I'm referring to was in the 70's and was advertised as 'The Big One'. It was stewarded by the T.A. not the Sea Cadets.

As I remember, catches on the day were poor (for the 70's, anyway).

roker pier was pegged and me mates jimmy sinnot & bob lake
were further to wards end so went for a walk to bum a cup of tea off bob lake and when a come back and reeled in it was lying on so a didn't a actuallly see the bite so nowt's changed in 27 years lol
