A couple of years ago I was sitting next to the brigade hut on shields pier, it was a lovely sunny Saturday afternoon, lots of people around, there were 2 guys practices pendulum casting one obviously teaching the other, the pier watchmen walking off the pier walked up to them and asked if the lead he had in his hand was theirs, they said it was and he replied that it had just hit a women further up the pier, I did see it crack off but not where it went, they quickly packed up and left.

Its all common sense really although some people dont have it and are just plain ignorant. For example I was fishing with the bairn on the quayside and two old guys came down, plonked themselves on top of me more or less and started swinging leads about. I had I a quiet word out of earshot of the littlun and they moved. Assholes.

Reminds me of the crap drivers who follow you so close you need to put a condom on your exhaust. If I had an old car I'd slam my anchors on deliberately.

In the context of this post though, I might be tempted to get an old rod and reel out, sort of expendable line on it, and cast all over their line. Knit one pearl one. Do it enough times and they'd soon bugger off.

Its like anything, IF carried out properly it can be safe enough. As already said though in crowded areas or where there are passers by then its a no no really. How many places do you need to 'wind' one up around here though ? Not many.
            Regards Nicky.

The lad killed on shields pier in 1982 wasn't struck by someone pendulum casting, it was a side thump, which can be more dangerous than pendulum casting, and food for thought...it was only a four ounce lead that hit him.
Whats really sad is a lad was killed on roker pier round end in 1987 that never gets mentiobed, he was hit by a 6 ounce weight that had cracked off from someone pendulum casting beside the bunker.
Have these deaths stopped idiots who feel the need to pendulum cast on crowded piers....no, I very nearly witnessed the death of a kid on roker pier just a few weeks ago, i watched a lad step out from the bunker and start swinging one around, and I swear the lead missed the childs head by millimeters, the guy casting didn't have the gumption to think somebody may be walking behind the bunker out of his view.
In my opinion, if you pendulum cast on a pier, you should be arrested and have your gear sold to pay for a stint in prison, it should be illegal anywhere there are other people and police should be able to charge people who do it on the spot.

They'd probably still do it from a boat.
These are the boy racer types with loud exhaust and boom box. Must chuck it as far as possible so everyone notices. Aren't I clever......

Would be a good idea to get the name and address of those doing this near to where you are. Tell them it's in case you need to make an insurance claim.

as i said in an earlier post if you are fishing from a pier or breakwater there is absolutely no reason for any type of pendulum cast, you are in deep water anyway and the showboating dicks who do it, remember the real sea anglers who are fishing alongside you only one word is going through their heads wa//er

As a pendulum-caster myself, I wouldn'r dream of attempting that method if there were other anglers in the close proximity.- it's got to be an 'overhead thump'

No matter what precautions you take re. strength and length of shock leader etc, there's always the possibility of line being nicked or damaged, resulting in a crack-off.

Mick was lucky, I remember young Paul Hurst on S.S. pier in the 70's. He didn't survive the result of an impact with a 6oz lead AND this wasn't even a 'Pendulum Cast'

                          You can't be too carefull!

I remember the Paul Hurst open every year on ssp in his memory.

Pendulum casting is ridiculous on crowded places as said before but as mentioned aswell, other forms of casting can be just as dangerous.Me and my brother were very lucky when we were kids on end of blyth pier.clever f***** came in between us and tried to blast it out, just over head but he let loose early and his sinker went up,we didnt even realise until it smashed off the pier inbetween us.

Problem with pendulum casting is the People doing it. I pendulum cast but not in crowded areas however if I am on the beach first and someone stands next to me then complains about my casting they can simply move. However lots of people think it's dangerous full stop it's only dangerous to be to the right of the person if he is right handed likewise left if someone is left handed.
