casting
hi everyone, just been reading all the posts and think the most important thing about any kind of casting is being aware of your surroundings-other people, type of ground ie how stable your footing is,objects behind and to the side of you AND NOT TRYING TO BE JACK THE LAD by adobting the look how 'good' i am at casting everyone-casting with all your strength not bothering about technique grunting, loosing control of your grip on the reel and ending up letting the line and sinker fly sideways cos you cant hold it.
As for pendulum casting lets not forget its the same as off the ground cast IF done correctly only with a swing forward and back before the cast.it uses the same area as off the ground cast but neither should be used on a pier just a brighton/overhead lob type cast.
ITS NOT THE TYPE OF CAST THAT CAN HURT OTHERS JUST THE ANGLER DOING IT.

why oh why do people insist on pendulum casting when fishing from piers, i see it all the time on the steetly fishing off the end which at high tide is almost 1/2 mile out in the north sea, yet they still try to get that extra few yards with a pendulum, even when fishing along the sides they try it, don't they relise the futher out you cast down the side makes no different to the depth of water you are casting into, if they dropped thier line down the side amongst the pier legs they have a better chance of hooking something.

Just reading an old Sea Angler mag from Feb 1983, i read the sad story of the young Paul Hurst on South Shields pier and the tragedy that happened, very sad...brings home the potential dangers of leads coming adrift...will do my best to add a few photos from the mag.

should NEVER be used.
I now only fish the beaches and I use this cast most of the time.......but I would never start a pendulum cast if anyone was close to me on my lefthand
side or below the casting area on my left.
In beach comps say down Holderness coast when I want to cast pendulum
and there's people to my left and I think its not safe I would approach them and ask if they would mind moving up the beach slightly if they didn't then I wouldn't use this cast Its as simple as that.
You would never forgive yourself if the worst happened.
John,no its not banned, mind you it used to be in the north-of -the-tyne comps....but it always says no dangerous casting and I've seen some very dangerous casting but not always pendulum.

All types of casts from over head thumping to pendulum casting are dangerous if executed incorrectly.
The term 'Dangerous casting' or 'Power casting' thats often referred to in opens isn't worth the paper it's written on. Any cast that puts a bait over 100yards is a 'power cast'. The majority of anglers who put a bait 100yards will use more force/power using an 'overhead thump' and result in more 'Crack offs' than lads putting a bait 120yards+ using a lazy fishing pendulum. The 'five plums!' IMO Pendulum casting on a busy Venue is dangerous.
One guy in particular I know in the Hartlepool area, regardless of how busy the Piers might be, downright refuses to cast any other way. I have seen his Leads almost taking Anglers heads off even though they were bent down!!
Cant imagine how many times he has been threatened but still does it.
Wonder what would happen if an Angler was Sued after an incident?
