  • Dangers of Pendulum Casting

The recent accident to Mick Davison brings home the dangers that fishing in close proximity to fellow anglers can present.

As a pendulum-caster myself, I wouldn'r dream of attempting that method if there were other anglers in the close proximity.- it's got to be an 'overhead thump'

No matter what precautions you take re. strength and length of shock leader etc, there's always the possibility of line being nicked or damaged, resulting in a crack-off.

Mick was lucky, I remember young Paul Hurst on S.S. pier in the 70's. He didn't survive the result of an impact with a 6oz lead AND this wasn't even a 'Pendulum Cast'

    You can't be too carefull!

Understand were you are coming from mate & most sensible anglers would agree, but as you know there is always a minority who are not sensible.
I will only be out for a couple of hours pet.

it is not really thew type of casting it is the angler who can't cast the way he is trying, have come closer to being clobbered by obver head thumps than pendulum casting. Common sense says that in crowded areas, wherever, you should not pendulum cast. Mind in the old days when anglers used the scarborough reels, sinker during the cast goes the same way as in the pendulum cast, and we did it when you where standing shoulder to shoulder, mind 60lb straight through might of help. Only crack I got there was when a lads line snapped and his rod hit the bac of my neck, though my head was going to drop off.

Thanks Alan, was hoping not to play Devils Advocate but that's what I do, with my 60lb straight through today. Have never hit anyone yet and organise myself to cast over others as we used to do "in the old days" and then rearrange how we lie. Luckily I avoid fishing with others as much as possible (not 'cos I dislike you all but because it increases my catching potential) but the fact is that if you use a leader it is as likely to become nicked and therefore lethal as other options.

I know you cant have eyes in the back of your head but personally I always keep my head down when I see others casting and turn my back I think in these days of higher tech gear with a hell of alot more power etc common sense about safety and respect for others must prevail we all know acidents happen but if you can pay as much resect to others as yourself then that would go a long way that's my thoughts on this.

Yeah, all forms of casting are potentially dangerous so I'm always checking my leader & end gear. Leader gets changed at the first sign of wear, which is quite often when I'm fishing over the rocks.

Safest place to be when someone's pendulum casting is clinging to their back like a little monkey rucksack or sitting on top of their heads.

Or lying down beside a fish

I was pleasure fishn with a mate at hendon prom 2-3 months ago (in the middle where the cars turn round), there was a club comp on not sure which club though but the guy next to us (he must av been a well known guy as he seem'd to be friends with all of the top fishermen in the area) you could tell he knew what he was doing the way he talked his set up and the best baits he had, all of a sudden he done a pendulm cast but got to close to the metal pole at the right, what a clash it made and lets face it the weight could av gone anywhere lucky enough it didnt.
If i remember right i think he said he was a member on here.
