I attended a meeting last Tuesday - 17th November - at the Concordia Leisure Centre, Cramlington of the County Angling Action Group. The CAAG is forming Action Groups throughout the country. These are being organised by the Angling Development Board. The one I attended is for the Northumberland Group. Another is being formed which will service Tyne & Wear.
The Groups will have access to funding for angling coaches, re-stocking, junior development, help for angling clubs, etc. for all disciplines of angling.
Present at the meeting (apart from myself) was Ben Thompson from the Angling Development Board and also representatives from Northumberland Sport, tackle dealers, Hardy & Greys Limited, commercial fisheries and angling clubs.
What concerned me most of all at the meeting, apart from one young representative from Get Hooked and myself, we were the ONLY sea anglers present. Of the other 22 people at the meeting, they were all game anglers.
The next meeting has been arranged for Tuesday 19th January 2010 at the Concordia Leisure Centre, Cramlington from 7.0 pm to 9.0 pm. At this meeting elections of Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Press Secretary, Volunteer Co-ordinator and Event Organiser will take place. Unless we have some sea anglers attending this meeting, every one of those positions will go to game anglers. We then will have no say whatsoever in where any funding or help will go.
Nominations for these positions are going to have to be made by e-mail to Ben Thompson the Regional Development Officer for the Angling Development Board. Ben's e-mail address is benthompson@anglingdevelopmentboard.org.uk.
He will be asking for nominations soon and I feel we need a presence from sea anglers on these County Action Angling Groups.
I have nothing against game or coarse anglers - I started as a game angler in 1939 and moved on to coarse angling in 1945. More or less, at the same time, I took up sea angling and still take part in all of these types of angling when I have time, but I must admit my real love is sea angling - both boat and shore - from tiddler to shark !
We don't want to be going to this meeting "mob-handed". If we could get two or three representatives from all of the sea angling clubs in Northumberland to attend the meeting on the 19th January, this would show that, as sea anglers, we have a positive interest in our sport. As soon as I find out the date for the Tyne & Wear Group Meeting, I will let you know.
The point of the above lads, is "Use It Or Lose It".
If anyone wants to contact me on this subject, please do. My home telephone number is 0191-5184561 or e-mail samharris01@aol.com.
