A bit of as long shot I know but another guy just mentioned that he has heard of them being around the Elephant on the Tyne. This has just struck a chord with me. I was fishing just up from the Elephant on the Tyne at Gateshead Stadium just down from the Schooner about 2 months ago and I was set up right on the bank on a 5.4M tide so the water was only a foot down from the side of the wall. A guy just down from me threw a sandwich crust in the river and I watched it float up river as the tide was still pushing in. Just after it passed me a heard a splash just behind my left ear and looked round to see a big swirl where the crust would have been. I did not see the fish but it must have been a couple of pound judging by the swirl and sound. I still wonder what it could have been but Mullet jumped to mind straight away as the area looks right for Mullet.

As for tactics I caught 2 Mullet in 2 days back at Whitehaven harbour many years ago, both were just over 3 pound. Tactics back then were plenty of bread groundbait and a small piece of bread buried in a tiny size 12 treble hook on 6lb mono float fished. Landing net and access to use it is essential as they have soft lips for their size.

Whitehaven harbour still has plenty of Mullet around the 3lb mark and it does not take long to spot them in the summer months (see photo taken last summer).
