Sam yes, my voice would send everyone to sleep.

and just to stir it up a bit more, did you know that a good few years ago, or the story goes, Bob Nudd was voted as BBC sports personality of the year, he had more votes than all the others put together. It was disallowed as they said all the anglers got together and voted for him. Is that not what other groups do, can just see the boxing fraternity all voting for a teenis player instaed of Joe Galzaghe.

I can't understand why folk who have a fantastic lifestyle and make a lot of money out of doing something they enjoy get awards from the queen for doing it? It's always baffled me , I'd rather see them go to RNLI crew or mountain rescue lads , youth club organisers , weekend football coaches ........ all manner of things folk do to help others with no financial return seem far more deserving than someone who makes a fortune out of a hobby ?
I watch all the fishing programmes , anything and everything to do with fish , but I don't think I can think of one presenter that desesrves a medal for doing it
Celebrities leave me cold , I don't understand the adulation they get, full grown women and even some blokes screaming because a singer is up on a stage in front of them ????? What's that all about?
Of all the fishing presenters on t.v. I think i like Cyril whatsisname (fishing adventurer) the best , but I wouldn't give him a medal

Hello, I have to agree, Alan Charlton and Sam Harris do a great job and deserve a lot of credit for their hard work, not only in their weekly reports but also in representing our sport when it comes to new legislation and similar threats. I also like reading the reports that Terry Woods has in the Shields Gazzette, a friend of mine keeps the Gazzette each week for me.

Codseeker, I remember when I was a kid every Friday night on the local news, Tyne Tees, there was an angling slot at the end of the sport report. Can anyone else remember this?
        Regards Ian.

              Angling T.T.T.V.

Hi Ian, it was me that used to put the report on Tyne Tees T.V. all those years ago, that was when George Harrison was the sports editor.
Nowadays it seems that angling is considered to be a hobby, rather than a sport by T.V. and radio, which is totally wrong. Sea anglers alone contribute over one BILLION pounds to the British economy each year, that does not take into account game and coarse anglers who also put a lot of money "on the table"
One of the last few radio stations featuring angling is B.B.C. Radio Newcastle who broadcast a half hour programme on saturday morning at 6 a.m. it's repeated on Sunday morning. It is also available on the internet at any time, the programme covers game, coarse and sea, I present the sea angling section.
              Tight Lines, Sam.

Just look at the attraction this thread has gathered and look at the input from both Alan Charlton and Sam Harris. That T**t John Wilson has'nt even bothered to post. Stuck up git cos he has got an MBE thinks he can ignore us now.
I say there should be Knighthoods for both Alan and Sam.
As I have grown older, I've learned that pleasing everyone is impossible,
but P*****g everyone off is a piece of cake.

lol, he is funny to watch, has a mental laugh but dosnt deserve an mbe.

they should go to someone how has contributed to something worthy, not just a tv personality. unless he has been doing some form of charity work on the side??

can think of some people that are 1million times more worthy of an award.

why does he never show you the times he blanks on the tv lol, if it was a program following me, you lot would be watching a blank screen with a big ape of a geordie, hissing and cursing until i got a fish!
                  now that is entertainment lol

Sorry lads ... the Sports Editor on Tyne Tees TV was George TAYLOR, not George Harrison. Forgot his name - but then I am getting old you know !!!

When Wilson films for the cameras, when he is freshwater fishing, someone pre-baits his swim for at least a week before the filming to ensure that there will be fish there.
I know the 'gentleman' in question - and take it from me quite often the fish he 'catches' when sea fishing have already been caught by someone else and then put onto his hook for him to 'catch'.
He was filming on a boat in Southern Ireland with friends of mine and one of the guys hooked into a good fish. The 'gentleman' in question walked across, took the rod out of his hand and directed the cameras on to him. When the fish was landed (sorry can't remember the species) it turned out that the fish would have been a new Irish Record for that species. Obviously the lad couldn't claim the record because of what had happened.
Two or three years ago, I took my wife to "Go Fishing" at Birmingham and after standing talking to him for five minutes or so, he was so arrogant and offhand with us, Christine looked him in the face and said "I think I'll go to the Ladies - it will be more interesting than listening to your 'crap".
I was in the Press Room at "Go Fishing" Birmingham talking to Keith Arthur when Wilson walked in, pushed his way between us - left me staring at his back - and started to talking to Keith (who, by the way is a gentleman ... not like Wilson).
The majority of the top angling writers, broadcasters and TV presenters are nice people. Like Alan, I know them all - it's part of the job. I can think of a lot more people who deserve recognition than Wilson.
Mike ... do you really think that Wilson would lower himself to read what we - the 'peasants' think of him. He is so far up his own backside to care anyway.
                          Tight lines

We have all got this far through life without Wilson and I am sure we can get through the rest of our lives without him ( with or without his MBE).
I still think the likes of Sam Harris and Alan Charlton should get some recognition for their dedication to angling here in the north east.

Some years ago at the Angling Exhibition at the NEC, I attended one of John Wilson's lectures. It was a slideshow and went along something like this :-
This is me with a big fish
This is me with a bigger fish
This is me with another big fish..........etc, etc.
This was around the time he'd first gone to India to catch the manseer and consequently most of the photo's were of him pictured with a manseer.
I think most of the audience were asleep within 5 minutes. Boring.
In contrast I attended a lecture by Charles Jardine, fly fishing expert and he was terrific. Also Ian Heaps, former coarse fishing world champion gave a demonstration in one the lakes outside in appalling conditions and made it thoroughly entertaining.
All generalisations are false, including this one
