  • Gill nets on the beaches?????

Fished blyth beach tonight, loads of peeps there fishing.

Word started to spread of there being a big string of Gill nets just off the low water mark.

Also heard that there maybe some around whitley??

Please dont post on hear if you catch any form of sort after fish.
If it is the case that there are nets there, we all know what they are for!

not sure if its just hear say, but its a bummer if they have been dropped there because of the shiney wee fish that have been landed there lately.

Keep it to yourselves, post pics up of any decent ones. Just be selective on who you tell.
follow in the steps of Sam Harris for the chronicle

    rant over haha

They dont need anglers to tell them where a couple of fish are, they already know and have known for years.

Happens every year unfortunately, get a few days/weeks decent fishing and then wham they're strung the entire length of the beach.

Why would a fishermen need to look at these forums to decide where he is going to shoot his nets, its not as if the beach has just been discovered. These fishermen have fished these beaches for years and certainly dont require written reports on an angling forum before putting there gear there, The last thing fishermen want to do after a hard days graft is look on a computer forum to find out where a few fish have been caught.

so are these nets legal? Most fish round here av caught are undersize anyway (small scoolies) so are no use unless they are keepin them illegally

well, i have also heard that a few of these peeps fish from the shore as well and have been getting info via tackle shop crack when they have been into buy some gear.

some of these guys only do it occasionally, i have seen them leaving the boat yard at blyth in a rowing boat, cutting under the wooden pier at high water and ten into the bay for their nets.

just wanted to see what the general thought was about it?

its legal, but they are wanting to stop it, a gill net will not allow fish through, they get stuck in it and most end up dead, it is supost to be of a certain size to allow small fish passage.

most beach anglers will plop a shiney silver fish back even if it is just over size, as they take so long to grow.
                      gill netters wont

has any1 actually seen these nets? it does p**s me off though, we could probs get some decent fishing if these fish were left a few years to spread out and breed, sad thing is these fish arnt even to a breeding age and whatever schools are in the area will be wiped out, very sad a think
am not a fan of nets is there no laws that they need to be so far from the shore?
