  • Penn Mag 525 experts to the forum please!

Got a query about my (slidey) 525 & hope someone has the answer!
When I slacken the drag off it locks against the handle & doesn't give a very loose drag, so I loosened the handle (securing nut) by a 1/4 of a turn on the locknut which gave me a looser drag, but when I tighten the drag up again the handle wobbles about. (hope this is making sense!)
Between the star drag & the handle is 1 washer, which seems fairly flat & not concave like a tension washer. So the question is, do I just need a new washer or do I need to check something else?
I know using the drag isn't so important on the pier/beach but I do like stuff to work as it should, if possible.

sounds like 1 too many drag washers or a bent star drag or bent handle

Sounds like the drag washers inside reel are sticking , this could be due to dirt, sand, etc. The handle nut should not be undone otherwise the handle will be loose when drag is tightened.
Retighten handle nut, release star drag completely and spin spool against the drag. You may find it will loosen off, but I suspect the reel needs a service to see what is wrong.

there should be a shim fits on top of star drag before you put the handle back on check to see if its there
