  • Seaham Open-few questions

Hello lads can i ask a couple of quetions about the compo as i have never fished a big open before.

You register between 8am and 11 am on the 29/11/2009.
    Fishing is from 11-4pm

How are you given a mark-say i want to fish on Seaham pier.
If i don,t get this mark - can i just fish anywhere in the bounderies Hendon Groyne to Dene Holme pipe (wherever this is).
How are the fish verified-do we have score cards and is there officials-like when we fish Police compos. On our marking cards we mark each other.

A few people have said they don,t like these comps because its easy to cheat.

I really fancy a go-but don,t fancy fighting for a mark-like noses point/Hawthorn point. (just give me 20 metres on the Blast/Hall beach).

    Cheers Lads
Personal best, 12.5lb Tope Scotland. 22/05/2012.

Competitions - How straight are they?

      Wotfettle, Mick.

At risk of boring everyone with my 'take' on competitions which crops up every year, I have to say that many, undoubtably ARE bent.

I no longer fish comps. because of the scams I have observed over the decades (not just locally but Internationally as well)

The geography of the majority of Sea Comps means that they are difficult or impossible to police adequately in that you would need almost as many 'Stewards' as there are competitors in order to cover every inlet, estuary and rock-edge.( and even then, you would have to be sure that the Stewards were 'Straight').

The oldest scam and easiest fiddle to implement is for a squad to go out the night before the Competition and pool their fish, keeping them refrigerated or at least cool during the next day. They then appoint one of their number to register for the comp.

They then drive the boundaries and find a sparsely populated area (that's where the fish were 'caught') If questions are asked then the 'Fiddler' has two or three 'indepedent' witnesses to verify his catches.

I'm not, in any way suggesting that all competition winners are bent BUT many of those which occur well-up on the prize-list ARE!

It makes me sick to my stomach thinking of the keen and genuine anglers who brave the elements at comps with the hope of getting 'in the frame' knowing that the cheating scrotes described above have spent the afternoon in the warmth of The Pub and are guaranteed a place 'on the podium'

      IT STILL HAPPENS!

Drof I think a lot of what you are saying is a load of **** most anglers are very honest it is very easy to see if fish aren’t fresh the gills lose there colour and the eyes go cloudy. The clubs up here are very good at the weighing and there have been a lot of fish over the years that have not been allowed to be weighed. Maybe it’s that you are just not good enough to compete with the top anglers

Don't be so naive Bonny lad. There's no physical difference between a cod that's been kept at the correct temperature overnight and in the right condition and one that's lain for four hours during the competition.

Don't forget that the main thrust of their claim is that they have 'independant' witnesses to vouch for the fact that they caught the fish.

My angling prowess has nothing to do with these cheats.

I'm merely statng FACTS that I KNOW to be true.

            P.S 'Honest Anglers'

I agree wholeheartedly that the vast majority of anglers are honest folk who pay their ten or twelve quid entrance fee and get a good day out with their mates and any fish caught is a bonus.

In fact the banter at 'signing in' and at the weigh-in is priceless AND I've done them all, both in this area and Jockland AND enjoyed every minute.

BUT! What leaves a bad taste in your mouth is the fact that some thieving scrote has a five or seven pound start on you before he even casts a line (IF he bothers to cast a line)

Wheyman get real and don't be so pedantic and unnecessarily aggressive.

I merely quoted five to seven pounds as a metaphoric example.

AND I repeat that you cannot tell the difference between a well kept fish that is twelve hours old, from one that is simply thrown down and allowed to dry for four hours.

What I am saying here is not new in competitive angling (although YOU may be). It has been common knowledge for decades.

The only thing we can do is be as vigilant as we can to deny the cheats their day of success.

However, if they are determined, they WILL succeed.

I did not want to start an argument lads.

I have only ever fished Police compos and these are very well marked----however Durham police recently took part in the Nationals at Felixstowe and the marking was bizarre. I still do not understand how they did it. A lot of anglers were very unhappy.

At the end of the day i suppose its down to personal choice if you want to participate.

                  Mick.

                            Just a couple of points.

Codman56, please do not use language like that on the forum again.

Drof46, how do you know about these "squads"? I fished comps for quite a period and never ever heard them being mentioned. I was also a member of a local fishing club for a couple of years and never heard them mentioned there either. What exactly would be the reason, or the reward for people to do this? If what you say is true it certainly couldn't be for the prize they would get. Maybe a rod or a reel, maybe even both if they were lucky. They wouldn't get much selling them second hand and shared between at least three or four, that would go down considerably. Besides that, you say they patrol the boundaries searching for somewhere quiet to fish. Unless they get free fuel they would also have that to pay for, that's without even mentioning bait for three or four people.

I would also say that it is also not guarranteed for the "squad" to catch anything either, once again cutting down on a chance of a prize and pushing up the cost of the scam.

I can't for one moment think it would be worth someones's time and money to do all of this, just for an outside chance of twenty or maybe thirty quid.

I don't doubt for one moment that there are a few individuals out there looking to cheat and get their fifteen minutes, but they are few and far between.

                            Jim.
Remember, some people are alive simply because it is illegal to shoot them.

To reiterate what Mick said, where are the boundaries exactly (google map link would be amazing), iv never fished it before either but am keen to. How busy do the main beaches Hall and Blast get? is it like the Brid Open with people getting there at silly o'clock?

                              Thanks
