peoples thoughts on good and bad rods for piers
just im gonna try my ultra thin on the pier tomorrow i know they are more for river etc but it will be its first outing since Stan built it just hope i don't get a big pig on the end otherwise i will be hand balling it up the pier.

just wanna see how the different set up works as been stuck in my ways when it comes to rods on the pier. always TTS

    cheers

    mick

Of all the rods I've tried, I think the AFAW Tournament Match is an ideal rod for shields pier - plenty of power and length to cast far enough, good bite detection at distance, and pokey enough to lift fish up the side. I use it with a Saltist 20, for the same reasons, gets a decent cast, and beefy enough to haul. (saying that I've just got hold of an AFAW 13' Surf today, it's a lot lighter, only 3-5oz but I'm keen to give that a go on the pier).

I think a lot of the mixed ground rods are more than a match for most fish on any piers and offer a bit more fun with most fish you catch. Defo worth going lighter in the summer though when the swells etc allow it. Be interested to see how your ultra lite goes...
