A lot of lads are now using fixed spools and braid. Depends on your budget really. Good thing about fixed spools is you generally get 2 spools. That gives you options. Heavy and lighter braid or braid and mono. Until your up to speed with braid just order some of the cheaper braid from china to get used to it. Don't waste your time with mono leaders either. Fish braid to braid leader.
The metal spinfisher 7500 lc is a good all round reel along with shimanos. Just look for something strong and robust. If your going the multi route the penn fathoms and daiwa saltist take some beating. If you can get hold of a usa model 525mag these are the dogs.
For multis most people use the Penn Fathom (usually the 15 size) or Daiwa Saltist 20 or 30 (outkast has just put one up for sale on here), or plenty people still use the slosh 20 or 30, or the original USA Penn 525 mag.

The old penn 535 (usa version)takes some beating, very robust, well made reel's....keep away from the newer mag 2 model's,not built the same as the originals..
