  • Beach Netting Again

I was planning a beach trip this evening but I have been told that there are nets 1/3 mile off Whitley, Blyth and Tynemouth at the moment - anyone know the story ?

the lads that will be doing it are the local lads who have done it for years, that is unless someone is doing it illegally. I keep hearing about the inshore netters are catching all the fish, they are not most are just like us catching the scraps that are left afer the big commercial trawlers have decimated the offshore shoals. Many years ago there used to be lines of nets from the Tyne to the Blyth and yet there where still plenty of fish caught off the beaches, there are less inshore netters using less nets now than there used to be. As I have already said the problem lies with the decimation of the cod stocks way offshore.

its not the offshore trawlers that have a huge impact.the gill nets are the worst,no escape and they just wait for the shore angling reports then bang the nets are out.with the trawlers most of which in the northeast target prawns do have a bye catch of fish but at least they have tight guidelines with the square mesh and quotas, just look at whitby and the ban of nets within 1-3miles what a difference.
oh and if you think the trawlers around here are decemating the fish stocks then go down and see what they land in fish.its about 1 box of cod 1 box of mixed and well yes loads of whiting.but look at what the shore fishing is like its great loads of small fish around to keep us shore anglers happy until now.the gill netters are out as they have read the reports of good fishing from the shore.yea i understand they need to make a living but to cover miles of the inland shore area is beyond a living and can only be considered as pure greed.its the same year after year a great start to the shore angling then oh bugga theres nowt and then the offshore trawlers get the blame well am sorry but av seen this throught my own eyes and will take anyone down to see the catches landed by the trawlers around here,at least they are or most of them miles offshore.but the inshore robbers with the miles of mesh are just thinking about money and not the regeneration of the inshore areas that we have around are coast.

It does seem to be the same each year. Reports of a few fish showing up in Sept then the net appears and by Nov the catch reports drop off. Agree with you Alan that it's always happend but I think there's no question that catched do drop off big time.

certainly they do now as the inshore lads and anglers are only trying to catch the scraps the big boys don'y hoover up, the problem won't be solved by banning inshore fishing, although at the minute it will help anglers catches, but these catches that used to go on until wqell into May now stop around christmas, the big boys need more and proper regulation. Years ago even an avearge angler would catch fish, now they don't stand a chance and many have packed in, whereas the top qanglers will catch fish as they know the marks better.
