  • fishing off the rocks with fixed spool

    hi all,
was on the rocks the other day and i seen a couple of good fishermen fishing with fixed spools with braid, is the fixed spools up for the job on the rocks ? i must admit he seeemed to to getting a big cast every time with no raffles ? is it worth buying a fixed spools ???? cheers steve

It's all I use now mate. Just give it a bit time to work it out and alls good. Braid leaders are the way to go to avoid ring wraps and everything else will come in a little time.

Easy casting, extra distance fast retrieve instant contact with fish, can feel everything including if your in kelp or on rock, only hard thing I found is finding the right set up! Personally think t1000 and a c14 framed fixed spool is best for clean/ mixed ground but on the really heavy stuff I find the full metal body fixed spool reels the best as they don't flex, the c14 frames still flex a bit under load but there stupidly light almost feel like toy but are stupidly expensive. Ideal time to learn is the summer nice conditions in day light, will be ready to go come the winter and will be second nature, some lads like who fish multi reel down prefer reel up fixed spool some don't.

Been using Ultegra's since re-starting fishing in late 2013. Fished Eyemouth, Craster, Beadnell, Swinedene, the Carrs, Beacons etc.. and they have been great.

Excellent to cast, great disatnce with braid although mono is also fine, have coped with fish up to 8lb easily, lift out quickly on the retrieve. I wouldn't go back to multipliers now.

The lad you seen prob could have done the same with mono. If people think they're are suddenly going to cast a lot further with braid they'll be sadly mistaken. Advantages are mainly over heavy ground with distance wise but not much on clean/mixed where lines of 15/18lb are used..

I love mine but I loved fishing with my 525s too.

Youl also probably find that the fixed spool reel the lad was using cost as much if not more than a decent multiplier. Good fixed spools are expensive

over mixed ground using fixed spool i can put 30lb braid as far as id get with 15lb mono on a small multi. on the heavy ground you can get 60lb braid as far as you'd get 20lb mono on a 525.

but its not all about the distance. at times though it allows you to get a stronger line behind some snags or into the tide over heavy ground. for just lobbing into heavy ground you can use 60 - 80lb braid with a heavy rotten bottom and get a lot more gear back.

i've actually sold all my heavy multi's for mixed to heavy ground and only use ultegras.

i still like my small multi's over clean ground.

A lot of people seem to think that top end fixed spools are the only ones to use which is a load bullsh@t to be frank. Some people might not be able to afford it, I know I can't, then might not try it and miss out on a great way to fish. As someone mentioned in another post, top end models will die just as easy as cheaper models of a range.

I use an ultegra 14000xt and a daiwa emblem 6000st. I paid 45 for the ultegra and 30 for the emblem, both crank them in out of heavy ground and both can wind 5lb up vertically. I'd put money on an aero techniums mgs dying before the emblem. So let's stop all macho arrogance bollocks about cheaper fixxys not being up to the job when I know it fine well is.

I've got the mgs and xsc.. There is nothing between them distance wise. IMO as long as it's got decent line lay and a longish spool you'll find there within 5yards of each other.. That goes for the affinity, pennfisher etc..

You pay the money for lightness and cranking power for what I can see. Not durability, casting ability etc..

You can drive a Ford Focus across fields but a land rover will do it better... I very much doubt an emblem will out crank or outlast the technium , I've got an emblem and it wouldn't last five minutes where I fish, I wouldn't even use my ultegras on rough ground cos they feel like they'll snap at the foot

Am speaking with fact though ? I use them no problem and fish 2/3 times a week. Not saying techniums aren't good, more that there's other choices for those that can't spend stupid money or need to be seen with the latest gear to class themselves as an angler. So you stick to your choice and al stick with mine, am not gonna lose any sleep over it.
