    wat reel

whatever reel you fancy see if you can get a mate to let you try theirs and give you a few pointers and give you an idea wats mabye right for ou

my recomendation would be 525 mag and practice till you master it, its not that hard. start with magnets on full take it easy and slowly and as you become more proficient take one magnet off at a time till you find the right setting for you

dont go okuma magnetix, they are sh#te. bought one last christmas when i restarted fishing. lack of confidence made me choose th size 30 with level wind. what a mistake that was although it certainly looks the part. big power handle and nice shiny brass bits. dont be fooled. it sounds like a bag of hammers in a sack when cast. I gave up on it and relegated it to a light boat reel. first time out the body came adrift from the foot in the reel seat due to corrosion. it got returned form whence it came.
in march i heard alot about them 525's from penn, bought one (525 mag extra)and was quite impressed at fiirst. however, i have given this one the boot now and only use it for light work (2-4 oz)which it does seem to excel at. the problem being that you need to use a shock leader for casting larger weights and 15-18 mainline. the reel performs better like this but there are downsides . I got sick as f##k putting new shock leaders on every trip from nests and snags. the nests will be my fault as i find the slidey mag adjuster twitchy and can be knocked into the "no" magnet braking zone quite easily. when casting its a dream when things go right but I always seem to be on the verge of an overun. I take it as read that im not the best caster in the world and the nests will be down to me. Ive since gone on to slosh 30's. superb, got no complaints with them and very forgiving. robust and able to cast good distances. you can put heavier line on aswell so enabling you get some snagged gear back instead of loosing the lot including shock leader and a load of mainline. the 525 still goes out with me as a reserve and if i want to get a little more distance.
me mate "castaway" on the forum is of exactly the same view.
just in case there are 525 fanatics out there who think my views are heracy and im a crap caster with little or no skill, then there probably right.

agree with you on the magnetix 30...I bought one as my first multi and wished I'd spent the money on a slosh 20 instead...did exactly the same and starting using it as a boat reel...less than half a season later it came off at the reel feet (exactly like you say)

My advice for a multi would be a slosh 20 or a 525 (I have both)...my heavy ground reel is an ABU 7000...with those three you've got all your options covered
          Ooh a new vid!

I used a penn 525 mag extra to learn with about 3 years ago and i still have it, i used 25lb straight through with a 3oz lead to get used to it (i did not use a shock leader as i was not power casting- before i got told off.) i then moved the wieght up to 5, added a shock leader, dropped the line down to 20lb and stuck like that for a while. Next step was getting the reel down the butt, using 6oz leads and giving it some welly.

I would say use a 525 mag extra, i did and it worked for me.

the reason that people generally have 1, 2 or even 3 reels is that in the event of an unfixable birdsnest/overrun (and they happen to everyone of all abilities at one time or another) then you have a back up to hand quickly

I will still have a fixed spool rig available so I can take my time with the multi and see how it goes...Andy..

wouldnt bother with a level wind ,unless you are going to fish with 50 lb plus straight through as shocker knot jams on level wind , either that or buy tapered shocker what is expensive. have you not got any mates with an old reel that you can try before you buy one.

for a cheap multiplier with level wind and casting brakes (recommened to start with they can be removed when your ready) id recommend http//www.bluebellangling.com thats where i got mine and it hasent let me down yet around £20 including delivery better than shelling out on the top brands they offer a full money back garantee too they will also offer advice on using it

I have a 525 super mag extra and a 535GS both are loaded with 20lb mainline and shockers. I like the 525 its a really good casting reel, the 535 is bigger and more robust. I will be putting 30/35lb line on the 535 straight through this winter, purely because I'm sick of losing shock leaders and some mainline. You can't do that with the 525 due to the capacity of the spool.
Something that hasn't been mentioned as reguarding birds nests is that you can slow the reel down using thicker oil or grease in the bearings/spindle. I put a touch of Rocket Fuel Liquid Grease under the end plate bearings and Red rocket Fuel in the spool bearings on the 525, what a difference it makes, much more control.
All generalisations are false, including this one
