  • Light, low diameter Rough ground rod. Advice needed.

I am after a new rod for rough ground fishing and need some help. I am ideally after a rod between 13 and 14ft with a low diameter and of a light weight no heavier than 810 grams. Got a Grey's Apollo mk 3 which fitted the bill perfectly but it snapped the other night and have now had too many problems with Grey's rods so would like something which is bomb proof.

Three rods I have looked at are:

    Zziplex M4 Evo
    Century CCC LD
Century Tip Tornado Sport 2009 Model.

If anyone has any of the above rods could you let me know what they are like and if they are suitable for rough ground fishing. Any help would be greatful.
    Thanks

    Rough ground rod

    Hi,
I may have the rod you are looking for. I have a Zziplex H.S.T EVO 13ft 8in extremely light (800grams ish), low diameter (27mm), even has fuji alconite rings to keep the rod as light and user friendly as possible. handles rough ground with no problem and bite detection is fantastic. I have a Conoflex nemesis plus SLR and it is as light as that!

Ive fished all the rough marks up here with it (newton, beadnell cresswell etc) and it performed perfectly.

It is for sale so if you wanted to come and have a look at it or even better i could meet you down the coast so you could have a cast etc with it. (highly frustrating buying a rod that you havent had a chance to use!) I paid £400 for it so would be looking around the £300 hundred marks as it is in superb condition. It has a slide lock reel seat and comes in Zziplexs' own rod bag which is heavy duty and prevents any scratches etc.

Feel free to give me a bell on 07896154770 or 01912668614.

mate if your after the best rod available for north east cod thumping i would go for either the century eliminator or the zziplex m427 standard.

          id say:

Shimano Aspire - 24mm diamter and so so strong.. but mega light.. i mean really light.. the 140MPT is a real smart bit of kit, but cause it dont have Zziplex or Century written on, people overlook / scoff at them without knowing how good they are.

Zziplex Bullet - sound all rounder without feeling lifeless, my personal fave, huge caster and spendid usability.

Zziplex Zeteque - a real strong beast but still usuable and forgiving. I sold mine as it was a bit to stiff for the fishing i do.

M427 - a Zeteque on steroids!!!! lost a bit of the usuability of the Zeteque but bags and bags of power... could tow in the QE 2!

Eliminator - a beast of a rod.. bit like a bigger but better and lighter TT-R, but a bit heavy and slow action.. ideal if your a 8 ounce pendulam man to wind it up and get it to work for you, but if not.. its a bit overkill and wasted. I aint owned one.. but had a go of one a few times.. may be one coming up for sale that i know of.

AFAW Tournament Rock - Lovely lovely rod.. but a bit tippy at the top for some of the serious Rock Heads.. again only 24mm diameter, spendid casting action.

Cheaper options are the Sonik SK4 or Ron Thompson Excellerator.

Just bought an m4 evo yesterday its not as stiff as my apollo mk3 that snapped but gonna give it ago. I will sell it on if its no good and have a look at some of the rods you have all suggested. Still wouldn't mind a look at a new tip tornado sport.
            Thanks for the help lads.

i sold a M4 Evo on here not long ago... has it got red and gold whippings? if so PM me, but its a strong rod but not really a rock rod... more a heavy beachcaster / strong tide estury rod.

the tip tornado sport is definalty NOT a rock rod.. its again a big hitting beach rod.

Is the aspire 130m as strong and as stiff as the aspire 140mpt have been reading up on the 130m and it has good reveiws but I haven't read anywhere about it being a rough ground rod. Would you say they were both suited for rough ground or just the 140mpt.
                      Cheers

the model you want is the 140MPT. (multiplier power tool) its the stiffest in the range. G

I have a tip tornado sport and its an absolute joy to use, its the 2008 model but ive had a play with the 09 one and its pretty similar in action with a slightly softer tip. Ive found these rods at first give you an impression that they are a clean beach rod due to the fairly soft tip however they hold alot of power and can easliy cope with anything that ive ever thrown at it (used it on some of the rock marks on the mull of galloway and was never left wanting). i baught a kompressor ss for a little more power but on a session with one rod i always go to pick up the tip tornado from the garage first, it is an absolut joy to use and i would recommend one to anyone.

Ive been using a 12ft Diawa longbeam for rock hopping and it only cost £50.00. You can cast it straight overhead when you havent got the space behind to pendulum cast. Very flexible and can still throw a 6oz gripper a fair distance.
Ive knacked a few expensive rods rock hopping and bought this to try and i love it. So far so good. All to our own i believe.
Best of luck Tiddler with your rod hope the christening goes well.
