New Rod Advice

Hi all,

Thanks for reading my post.

I'm moving up to Newcastle in a few weeks and looking for a new rod to celebrate and give myself a pat on the back I've been doing the long distance thing with my girlfriend for a couple of years and decided to get a cheap set up for fishing the piers when she was doing sport on sunday mornings. I got a penn mag 2 225 for xmas so naturally a good rod must come next...

I've learnt (not just from fishing) that 'buy cheap, buy twice'. I'm looking for a rod that I will be happy with for at least a few years but will hold it's value should I want to sell it on.

I've got a job up in Alnwick with flexible working hours so would be aiming to try marks such as Creswell in the week if time allows. I'm not comfortable with fishing hard ground yet so I think Clean - Mixed would be ideal. I've no experience of fishing north of the tyne. My girlfriends parents lived to the South so all my fishing was done on Roker and SSP, Hebburn, Walkway, Glass Centre and Rathouse - as well as a few trips around Sandsend, Whitby during the summer.

As for casting style, at the moment I use OTG. I'm leaning towards buying a Greys Apollo or Century Rod. My budget is ~ £300-400

I think something that would fit the bill would be a Century Tip Tornado Sport - a very good all-rounder that wouldn't be total overkill on clean ground, perfect for the mixed marks, and quite capable should you decide to venture onto something a bit rougher. A very popular rod around these parts, always in demand so should hold it's value as well as any other and well made - personally the older model Tip Tornados were, I think, some of the nicest rods Century made.

Be prepared for lots of differing suggestions / opinions......

You definitely need, without a shadow of a doubt, a just about brand new, used only once, in perfect nick Century J-Curve which is ideal for mixed to clean ground. And as it happens I know where you can get a bargain on one......

But seriously, if you're looking at a heavy ground rod then maybe something like a C-Curve of Kompressor SS. If however you do want to focus on clean to mixed, look up the J-Curve and see if it could be what you're looking for. If it is let me know - its a great rod but I'm a big lad and its just a little too lightweight for me. You're welcome to try it or my Kompressor SS (not for sale but could be a rod for you to consider if moving to rough ground).

Have also heard great things about the TT Sport, as already mentioned but haven't had a chuck with one.

In the form of the M sport Power and an M sport match for the sum of £125 each" I have both for over a year now and love them but the choice is yours.
The lads on here may let you have a cast with various types to help you.

welcome to Newcastle james the advice the lads are giving is spot on m8 I have century tip tornado sport and its one of the rods I pick first when am out fishing it will cover all your fishing needs probs abit stiff for the cleaner ground but nevertheless its a cracking rod any info you require for marks north of the tyne just pm me and I will help you out there .you are more than welcome to borrow the tts and see if the rod feels right for you

I think I'm going to go with the tip tornado sport as suggested - I might decide to go onto the rougher stuff later on so would be a good idea. Also like the fact that the promotional video has St. Marys lighthouse in it!

I've found a second hand, excellent used rod for £280 - worth it you think?

for £280 it should be in a1 condition just make sure when you look at it it has plenty spigot the guides are not rusted and that both parts of the rod belong together they should have matching numbers take the butt cap off and check for any cracking hope this helps m8

The tts was what I opted for only a couple of months back when in a similar situation to you. All I can say is it's brilliant, I find it perfect for pretty much everything I've thrown at it upto now (not that that's a great deal) but it's spot on would highly recommend, much slimmer blank than the Komp s too.

You could pick one up for a lot cheaper than £280. Seen one earlier in the week for £200 on the fishermans locker with k guides etc.

rod choice

some of the lads have offered to let you try there rods out, cracking advice and offer, try before you buy .
possible you may go for a rod you think will be suitable for yourself then you find out its not for you the tackle shop will not take it back.
take some of the lads up on there offer have a few chucks with different rods select the one that's suits you don't just get one because it looks nice.
problem is there are a lot of good rods on the market now,
I myself have a zipplex SST and a leeda icon sport match hell of a difference in the price but excellent rods .

You could pick up a 2nd hand Zziplex M4 Evo for that price or for a few quid more a Zeteque TXL or TXL GT. You'll find the Zzippies hold their value much better than Century rods, all down to personal preference in the end but I love my M4 Evo

Aye, TXL is a bit of an animal, should have said standard Zeteque or the TXL GT. I blame a long day at work

If if was me mate I'd definatly buy a rod 2nd hand. Then you'll have the spare cash for a rough ground reel as well.

If you decide on the TT sport they are no bother in the rough ground. I've lifted cod up the top of the wherry with my mk1 TT and I seem to pull through more snags than with me komp SS which just snaps the line straight away.
