Just got back from a Caribbean Cruise with the missus where I took my usual travel fishing kit and a couple of telescopic rods. Unfortunately I wasnt allowed to fish from any of the port docking points so it didnt even get unpacked, however we went on a trip where we were guaranteed to be able to swim with stingrays which were apparently harmless so I left the rod and reel on the ship.
After the guide explained how Steve Urwins death was a combination of several avoidable factors I was a bit happier about getting up and close to these amazing creatures. The rays have been tamed over the last 30 odd years by the local fishermen who use to gut their catch over this particular sandbank and the stingrays found that by turning up at the sound of the boats they would get a free dinner. Nowadays they are so use to be handled they are just like pets and love to be hand fed with squid. There is nothing quite like being surrounded by several very large rays banging into you wanting to be fed.
I hope my pictures end up on this post as I think I have eventualy worked out how to do it so here goes.
