There's a rumour around at the moment that commercial cod fishing will cease from next Thursday until the new year. Has anyone else heard anything? Apparently this will be announced shortly??

Not heard anything, would be pleased but also canny suprised if it happens. -
Not heard anything but it would be because all the quota has been caught for the North Sea. This happened very early last year ( I believe it was early June).
This doesn't necessarily mean you will see no one fishing for them as "Producer Organisations" have a seperate quota and can fish until this is filled.
The MFA monitor landings and as they approach the limit they announce a closure date. The limit was raised by 30% this year from the figure in 2008 so it figures that the quota will last longer. The closure will last until jan 1st and the quota for next year will be decided in talks held in early December... expect to hear shouts for a quota increase from the commercials.Save our Sharks Member

its the gill netting that needs to be restricted or stopped on the north east if they stopped that there probably be better sport for us shore anglers. there dos'nt seem to be any restrictions on them as have seen nets put out canny few times along the coast fairly close to the shields pier 5---600yds+ right up to marsden and been told even past thereComment

The commercial aspects are the ones that seem to be highlighted in most studies.
Said studies also seem to ignore the local impact of a community where income,employment and knock on effects result from anglers.

Unfortunately this is where natural suspicion comes and people dont take part in these studies. I have just forwarded a copy of the SSACN report on the value of angling to the Scottish economy to the NSFC and it has been entered into the "Epitome of Correspondence" and will be discussed at the next quartery meeting. Several of the councillors are already looking for ways that the SFC could help promote tourism and hopefully this kind of support can be used to get bylaws that favour anglers and their contribution to local economies.

The way it turns out, the Angling Truss is not intereted in anything the sea angler has to say. They are only interested in course or game angling. This has shown in how the Angling Truss is now falling apart. The only time it was ever interested in sea anglers was when it neded the money from the sea angling clubs to fund course/game projects.

give the fish a chance to reproduce and keep stock levels up.
i dont give a toss if it means we have a better chance of fish or not.
its nice to catch fish, but i just enjoy being out of the house doing somthing.
if trawlers continue to chuck dead fish over the side and bleed the sea dry of cod etc, we wont have enough in the future to allow them to increase in numbers.
thats my take on it anyway.
i hope this is going a head, and continues to happen in the future ;DComment
