It was a last minute thing, but it looked like a decent break in the weather so decided to have a trip up to Dunstanburgh Castle with my mate to see if I could top up my winter bait with some mackerel. Started fishing at about 1.00 ‘pm’ spinning at first but it was very slow, only one other fisherman there who was using daylights and had caught five mackerel in the hour before we had arrived. My mate stayed on a lure and I changed to daylights. In the next three hours I only connected with fish on four occasions but had two or three fish at a time on a small 50gm spinning rod which took me an age to bring the fish to shore. My mate caught 17 mackerel on his lure in the same period along with quite a few small coalfish , all the mackerel caught were a decent size. This was a cracking days fishing nice and quite in a beautiful part of the North East coast just as summer fishing should be.
