Any Ideas?

You know the old indestructable gear the Storey family have fished with since the beginning of time? Well this years holiday took its toll. One of the handles on the Scarborough needs repair but I can cope with that. The main worry is the seat for the reel on the big rod - the metal holding the reel has split. I've tried to take a piccy of it but I know it's not too clear. Any ideas? My other rod has a fuji type more modern seat so it may be that I can replace it rather than repair it. Any help would be a bonus.

Hi David, hard to tell from the photo but has the metal just split or has it broken off a bit as well? To replace the reel seat would involve stripping off all the corks below & replacing them as well as de-aralditeing (?) the reel seat itself.

I'd be more inclined to try & knock the seat roughly back into shape (if it hasn't broken off) then slip a good sturdy jubilee clip over the whole assembly & tighten it down, then lash with a bit of tape. Not the neatest idea maybe, but I don't know how easy the corks etc are to come by these days.

I know when a lad came into Frasers (now Lewis's) in Whitley Bay a few weeks ago with his battered old rod looking for tip rings, there was nothing close to the 10mm or so required in any of the current catalogues. Best shot for a repair might be to have a word with Ronnie at ID Fishing in Byker - I think he keeps a bucket of bits&bobs & may know the whereabouts of getting some corks etc if you're looking for a repair.

I have an old boat rod the same happend to that i used a jubbilee clip as mentioned but the other would be to peel the old metal off and maybe use a coaster??

for my 2 penneth, remove the piece on the damaged side and use a coaster on that side

I'd go jubilee clip as well, coasters just wouldn't look right with the trusty of scarborough

I shall look at the Jubilee clip option and thank you Codseeker for having concern for my digits. Will keep you informed of the progress, unless the 2 unopened pms I have are from rich benefactors looking to kit me out for free.

Just as an aside one of the guys up the road bought a new shed to house his coarse fishing gear. 2 days later he has it all robbed. Unfortunately, he says, he's only insured for £1,700 and that won't cover half of it. Puts my fishing nest egg of about £100 a year in perspective (and that includes bait).

David, The cork above the winch fitting needs to be stripped off, and any eyes on the butt section, and a new fitting fixed on ,then re-corked. The difficult part is finding the bits to do the job.

Don't think so - but could be wrong! The rod blank ends just at the top of the corks (hence the whipping) & is then fitted with a parallel, thick section of fibreglass which is spiggoted inside & forms the handle (this enables the corks to be fitted easily, rather than on a tapered blank).

Therefore you'd go at it from the bottom of the rod, removing the button & lower section of cork, about 12 inches worth. The reel seat is glued over a section of whipped string & can be a bit of a pig to get off, lot's of heating if I remember rightly. That's assuming that the construction is the same as the one I busted the butt section of about 30 years ago (not fishing, accident in the old man's garage!).

Well I would either use a jubilee clip, or just get a weld repair done on the part that's split, a nice band repair welded & your rod would be tip top again & the repair would last forever , look smart & be stronger than t was when new, no need to worry about catching your fingers etc, nice easy job with a mig .

Use a fine wire MIG welder. That should hold it together for some time.

Quick update - jubilee clips are in place but I'll wait until I have a go with them before I post a picture (just in case it looks like one I made earlier on Blue Peter) Have also fixed the damaged handle....went to the last company in the West Midlands, called Coronhursts, if anyone knows them....well not called that now as they went bump but all the guys are the same in the new company. Said I needed some brass screws for the handle. Ooooh they said - not sure, could do you some stainless steel self tappers....Nooo says me - look at the quality of the brass....Mmmmm they say...we have a lad who goes fishing...see what he says. Lad arrives, looks at me, says "You were my PE Teacher - I left in 1979...."Pritchard" I says...."Brass what" says he - leave it with me...problem solved. Watch out in the NESA comps - I'm back..........hopefully

Thanks for everyone who gave me a clue. Still have the welding option to fall back on.
