Depends a lot on your budget: for rocks, beach & pier something like a Ron Thompson Axcellerator rod & Daiwa SL30 reel - get both new for under £200 (and a lot less second hand). My own preferred "all-round" outfit is (currently) a Sonik SK4 14ft with a Saltist 30 reel, loaded with 30lb line. It's a bit overkill for clean beaches though, so you might prefer a smaller reel & lighter line for that. Something like an SL20 or Penn 525 mag might be a better all-rounder & some good bargains can be had second hand.

There's probably no such thing as a truly universal outfit though - some marks demand long casts with lighter line, others benefit the heavy approach. That's why so many of us end up with "too much gear".

I'm sure lots of people will be along with their own suggestions soon, but whatever you lean towards, try and have a go with it first - what suits one person ain't necessarily going to suit another.

      Cheers, Gary

Billy's Tackle in N Shields & I.D. Fishing in Byker usually have a selection of 2nd hand rods - not sure about reels though. Lewis Tackle (formerly Frasers) have got a RT Axe (new) & the Daiwa reels - if you mention that you're a NESA member you'll get a 10% discount. Sure other shops will do the same (those are just the ones I know). They'll also be able to give you good advice on what's available new for your budget.

Depends on where you live - there's also the classifieds on this site & the yellow paper is often worth a look.

          Cheers, Gary
