First multiplier

Merry Christmas everyone!

I'm now the proud owner of a penn mag 2 525. It's my first multiplier having previously only used large fixed spool reels.

I've had a few practice chucks in the park and I think I'm converted already. I put the mags on full and didn't get a nest which has always put me off multis.

Just wondering what people do after a session? Rinse it in water etc?

Also, how often do people take their reels apart to oil and grease etc?

Hi mate and glad to hear you're enjoying your new multiplier.

I tend to just rinse the spool under the tap, not the entire reel, as you don't want water to get into parts which could otherwise corrode, and water in the bearings or mixing with the oil (I know oil and water do not mix but it's not best still). That's what I do and worked every time for me, then gave the reel a good wipe down with a cloth. Simple and effective

How often you take it apart depends on where and how you have been using it.
The same as your fixed spool usually. A lot less if you only ever fish off a pier and more if you are fishing off a windy beach or getting it soaked in sea water/sand.

Always rinse mine with fresh water and dry after EVERY use. I've had a service on each reel about once a season aswell. Had a couple of my reels around 15yrs plus and they are still running well.

If you drop one in the sand or salt water though I would make sure it has a proper good old clean and service though.

After every sesh its rinsed under warm water In the sink. If fishing from a pier or rocks ideal but if on beach and its windy sometimes grains of sand get in. U can hear it when you spin the spool near your ear as u rinse it. When this happens I take the screws out of the side and take it off (not the handle side) I then clean out the inside of the reel with a piece of kitchen role. The spool just pops out. I the use the oil I got with the reel and lubricate where spool spins either side and put it back together. Its easy. When you spin the spool and hold it next to your ear u should hear no grating from the sand.

Glad you have not nested it as nothing worse to put you off.
The mag2 is a very user friendly reel and on number 10 it's almost impossible to get a nest unless you have a very strong headwind and get your timing drastically wrong.
I give my reels a 10 second rinse under warm water to disperse salt crystals and oil every 3 outings unless not using for a while then oil before storage and very light wipe over with WD40, Hope this is of help to you

It'll be good to learn a new way of fishing. Looking forward to trying it out in a few days. Hopefully I'll get no birds nests then!

Very,very user friendly reel's,start with the mag's on full n slacken off till you get to a setting that's best for you n the conditions.
One good tip,very prone for the reel seat corroding,the old ones were s/steel so had no probs with corrosion,so rinse after each trip to minimise the corrosion

After a session, if the reel has not been soaked by sea water, I wouldn't run it under the tap, as water can get into the bearings, and if they are not stainless steel, and water of any kind is lying in the bearings, they will rust.
I find the best way to clean it is with a damp rag, then a little wd 40 on another rag and wipe over.
Some of my reels are over 25 years old and still perform great.

Quick rince under hot water to dissolve salt then toothbrush in the reel seat / nooks and crannies. Dont spray wd40 directly as you will most likely cover line and that wont help with grip when casting lol. I use car wax on cloth as this protects the reel by beading the water to help run off while oil does its job inside the reel

Clean bearings with petrol every so often Then use one drop of rocket fuel every session
