  • Mackerel as bait question

Hello folks, I went fishing last night on the beach using only mackerel as thats all I had. Never used it on its own before so was wondering if I was doing the right thing. I cut strips about an inch wide by 3 inches long and put them on the hook, lashed down with bait elastic.

Was this the right way to use it or should I just put it on the hook without the elastic so it flaps around a bit. I am mainly interested in bass and was fishing with the bait on the bottom.

Any tips on the best way to use mackerel would be very appreciated

    Cheers
    Dean

Cheers Codseeker I will try that. Would you still need to tie it on with elastic when using a pennel set up? I've never used pennel rigs before .

Whip it on regardless, cod seekers is a good suggestion as well. An old boy I used to fish with (Capt. Caveman) used to cut cubes and thred them up the hook and line, still whipped on as well. If you're float fishing or something gentle then belly strip, the white stuff can work and only whip the top bit to your hook and leave a wee tail

Thanks Charlie, I will continue doing what I did then, but maybe try a pennel rig for bigger bits. Cheers for the advice, I will give it a go this weekend.
