hi all. just a quick question. am about to apply rocket fuel to my bearings of my 525, i usually clean them in water, then give them a good dry before applying the oil.

is it better to use petrol or lighter fuel to clean them before lubricating or will this damage them??

i usually use red rocket fuel, or is it better to use yellow for maximium distance. might use both on two reels and see which copes best for a pendulum.

    info would be much appreciated.

petrol, lighter fuel will clean bearings 0 k , but soaking them in wd 40 does the job just as well, a leave them to soak in wd as long as it takes to clean rest of reel, take them and out then spin bearings to get any excess wd out leave them to dry on clean kitchen roll ( takes bout 5 mins ) and 2....3 drops of oil of your choice on each bearing, a find 3 and 1 oil ideal Aand all my penn mags run and cast smooth.Hope this helps

Soaking in lighter fluid is the way to go Dean, it removes all impurities including any previous oils. A soak of around 10-15 minutes is all that is needed. Lift them out and let them dry on some kitchen roll for 10 minutes before applying the rocket fuel.
