  • JUNIOR SIZED RODS

A work colleague (and his young son) are wanting to take up sea angling for the first time. He\'s already had the young\'n freshwater fishing and he loves it.
He was asking me today for suggestions on a half way decent beachcaster for the lad (and one for himself, I assume). I suggested to him that he goes over to Billys to have a look at what\'s available........any suggestions from you regarding a suitable rod for a bairn ??.......I think George said his son was 8

There will be loads of rods to choose be tween Tony but I would tell him to have a look round the boot sales mate, There are always loads of bargains to be had.

    Jim.
Remember, some people are alive simply because it is illegal to shoot them.

a lot is gonna depend on how big a rod the lad can handle a 12ft might be a tad too big ,the shakespear mentor pier rod 8ft has a decent tip and casts quite well and is fairly cheap

just correcting my spelling of pier or is it peir lol

my bairn uses a Ron Thompson G force fs set up (ex extreme stick) you can get a rod and reel deal fairly cheap, these are good rods but he developed from sea fishing with a spinning rod,so it might be a bit too much for your buds son, could be ideal for the next step up though
(he\'s ten years old and has probably been using it for 18 months it was a hard hat area at first but he got there in the end)

My son (8) uses a heavy 7ft spinning rod (rated 20-60grms) and my daughter (14) uses an 8ft uptide rod (rated 2-6oz) and they\'re both soft enough to forgive any mistimed casts and let them enjoy the fishing. I bought both rods off ebay for £7 and £12 respectively, so if they go off the fishing it\'s no big deal.
Both the bairns use fixed spools as well, it\'s all a case of making it as easy as possible to get a bait into the water and not put them off fishing.
Jims Discount Tackle has some cheap \'n\' cheerful rods and reels and he\'s a nice bloke to deal with.

I gave the bairn a whole beach (empty) to play on,it gave him loads of confidence as he had nothing to think about other than casting
