light spinning gear, 1 lure, definitely the way to catch mackerel. Stocking up your freezer with bait's all good but might as well make it fun. Feathering just seems like commercial fishing to me, plus you have to stop fishing sooner as you can't keep that many mackerel fresh for long enough. They do fight like hell though, if they grew to 25lb no-one would fish for anything else..

I would also agree with Paul too, fish light and you will have a great time. I would have to say that Mackerel, Pollack and Wrasse can be great sport when fished on light gear. Pound for pound more fight in them than Codling and I would class all of them as "real fish" too, whatever a real fish is lol.

We all know that there are the mindless idiots that go out each year and catch loads of Mackerel, leaving them all day on the piers to go off in the sun, catching far more than anyone with a tiny bit of common sense would do and quite often just leaving them when they go home. Lets not go tarring everyone that likes to go out fishing for Mackerel with the same brush though, It's something I have enjoyed since I first started fishing and hopefully something I will manage to do again this year. Nothing nicer on a hot day than to stand on a pier and attempt catch a few, much better than being at work or being sat in front of the bloody television lol.

You can sometimes fish all day with a spinner and for some strange reason not get a touch, stick some feathers on and instantly get a take. When I go I always take both, if the lures don't work I will cut some feathers in two and try them. I usually go with just two as on a light rod you wouldn't get them out of the water if you got a full house lol. I still think though that float fishing for any of the afor mentioned fish with a float has to be one of the most exciting ways of fishing, especially if you are closer to the water

I also have a couple of telescopic rods and if you hook a Mackerel on one of them then you have to play the fish for a while before you can land it as the rods are not strong enough to bully the fish to the shore, that is also great fun and it also gives the fish more of a fighting chance too.

Totally agree, with the lightest of gear and right conditions i.e (early morning, calm sea, no wind and not a numpty insight) can be the best few hours fishing you can have IMOP.

I will be out with a spinning rod looking to catch them singly.
had the odd go now and then but i have NEVER caught a mackie from the shore or pier.
Only on boats.
But going to give it a good go this year

I've never used ay other method than float fishing for them, or on the odd occasion, spinning. Great sport with either method on a light spinning rod. However my ultimate 'goal' is to catch one on a fly rod. Don't fancy going out in a kayak, and a charter boat is out of the question (especialy with my casting). I have tried Dunstanburgh point, but it isn't realy fair to other anglers there to keep out of the way of you casting.

So my question is : "Anyone know of any rock marks where you can fish at water level with a fly rod, and be secluded enough to thrash away with a fly safely" If anyone has any idea, but you don't want to advertise it, then please feel free to PM me. single handed baitcasting rod, 5lb line and a meps, light the blue touchpaper and watch the fun, used to be able to do that a lot on the welsh coast but doubt looking at the last few seasons reports here that i would have the space or the peace over here

having taken small bass and similar sized macks on the same gear i would say the humble maccy is the better fighter - mini tuna

however fish very light and you will be supprised just how good most our sea fish fight

It's the float for me all the way - one fish at a time on as light a line as I can get away with. You definitely seem to get the bigger fish on the float too. However, I got myself a salt-fly outfit late last year (too late to really try it out) and am looking for some marks as well as I've been told mackerel on the fly fight about as hard as a trout 3 or 4 times the size. Should be great fun!

I've got a mark in mind, only a stones throw from home, but it'd only really accommodate one angler, and to be honest I don't know if it'll fish at all! We'll have to wait & see, but I suspect the better marks involve a bit of traveling. Up the coast I reckon pollack would be worth trying for - I reckon a sizeable one on the fly would be cracking sport.
