Decided to give the Ice-House a visit today being nice & sunny and all and wanted to bed in some new line having just re-spooled both my 525's and an SLX20 with some of the new Powersteel line. So got down there about 3pm and got the baits in the water. Sat down & poured a coffee, lit up, then decided to get another trace ready, so went rummaging in the box. I then look up to see a boat coming down-river swing in towards the fish-quay - too late! 100yds or so of line chewed off!
Grumbling & cursing, I stick on another reel, chuck out & proceed to get into a fast had. Carelessly, I let the line catch the edge of the quay when pulling for a break and "twang" - another 150 yds of line gone! Out comes the last reel and I finally get a little codling & the mood improves slightly (though not much!)- maybe things'll pick up.
So then a fella wanders by & we get chatting and I chuck out, foolishly failing to see a yacht a couple of hundred yards to my left heading upstream. I figure I've got about 20 seconds for my line to get down before he's on me, so there's me going "get down, sink, sink......" - no suck luck, I'm round the flipping propeller again and I can feel that "tug, tug, tug" as I hold on for a break. This time, there's about 30 yds gone when I get it back & the last 20 or so is pretty chuffed, so I strip it off, and as it's the only reel with enough line on to fish with, tie on another leader and get on with it. Only one hour in and I've managed to trash all three reels!!!
Debating whether or not to just call it a day I decide to stick it out and finally things improve, although I'm struggling to get out in the middle as the reel is emptying and I'm catching the odd snag when retrieving. By about 7pm the tally is 8 codlings, 6 undersize & 2 sizeable, although too small to keep (strangely preferring the lug to the mussel/crab cocktail) with a couple of double shots, and a few more lost to the snags. I've now re-re-spooled all the reels and just hope I've used up all my bad luck & stupidity for a while!
Gary......grrrr
