If you can, get a wagon inner-tube from a tyre fitter. Much thicker than bike inner-tube and mine is still producing "thumbies" 15 years on! Cut the reel seat end as a T shape, then wrap tape around the base of the T which traps it in place on the rod. The longer part of the T becomes the long thumby itself to stretch over the reel spool under your thumb.

I use braid and have been using the thumb (For Multiplier) and the index finger ( for fixed spool) cut off an old pair of motorcycle gloves for the last 18 months. Bore a small hole at the base of the leather finger on the top side, and loop an elastic band through. I wear it on my wrist until I need to use it then put it over my finger or thumb for casting.

      A couple of pics

Cricket bat grip, use it to cast n stop the spool when its wet but not to thumb over the spool as the rubber can burn onto the line or to much pressure and it'll stop it mid flight causing a snap off

I use a short length of bicycle handlebar tape fixed to the rod beneath the reel. You can thumb the reel without any ill effects. I would attach a photo if I was in any way technically competent...

Spool slip is generally the result of too much power too soon - slow your cast down and hit it later and you should find it much less of a problem whilst maintaining or even improving your distances
I steward I am a otg caster I done a bit tournament casting on here I was ok with smaller reels ,I haven't the biggest of hands lol, , I have a slight weakness my hand I thumb the reel with due to a brain injury I had 5 years back ,plus I grease all my bait with crab, blacks, squid, macki oil extracks which doest help and all my m8s seem to always use my rags ,never mind cheers and have a good winter..

Hello Mick. If you pm me your address I'll send you a couple of thumbies. They fit under the reel seat and fall back when you cast.
