I was thinking of taping something under the reel seat to stretch up to the reel so when you cast out the material comes straight of the thumb to control the spool

Cut a strip of bike inner tube and tape it on the reel seat. Done it for years.

inner tube can help , but some are even slippier when wet as some not proper rubber
andy shagannis uses the rubber tube thats used on buson burners, any thing that is true rubber should help

mick, or could learn to cast properly LOL

Actually Bob is on to something - it is a technique thing. On the odd occasion I suffer from spool slip I know it's because I've got the timing a bit wrong.

Spool slip is generally the result of too much power too soon - slow your cast down and hit it later and you should find it much less of a problem whilst maintaining or even improving your distances
