  • lucky fish

when fishing yesterday i managed a cod of just over 3 1/2 lb but was foul hooked , on seeing this a got loads of of banter , (friendly I hope lol)l lucky fish they said foul hooked fish dont count they all cried , and the most said was if it was them that had caught it they would have thrown it back,, so fellow NESArites what do you all say does foul hooked fish count or not and if the latter would you throw it back and what if it was a PB fish
well in MY opinion if my hook is any where in fishes body it counts

this is a friendly question and a bit of fun ,no abuse please

If you land them that's all that counts in my eyes my pb fish took a small fish so wasn't actually hooked I actually it back as it was full of roe. But some comps say it's got be hooked in front of the gills

In most opens & club comps foul-hooked fish do count - fish caught on a lost rig that you may happen to pull in don't.

If it's big enough to go in the pan I don't care if it's in it's arse or it's eye it's coming home. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. Had they lads taking the mick caught owt?

Our lass and me mam love the few fish I take home (I try my best but I'm still learning. Ha ha) So much that me mam has stopped buying it from the supermarkets cos they are crap compared to a proper fresh fish she says.

Saw a 65 year old bloke catch his biggest cod of 22lb off a boat. It was foul hooked in the tail. It nearly killed him bringing it up! LOL.
Who would be such a numpty to tell him to put it back?
Quite often when you foul hook a fish it is badly injured anyway!
People will be calling for only barbless hooks to be used next.
I fly fish and can tell you that barbless hooks can cause bad injuries inside a fish's mouth but they are considered more "sporting".

Keeper for me! He likely good is the fish was after your bait anyway if it got close enough to be foul hooked.

Of course it's a keeper, it's just a bit of banter when said they don't count I've said it myself a few times this year on the boat

                      KEEPER.
a few years ago i had a fish of 6lb & 3.1/2 lb on same rig, 6lb er had took the hook but had come out of its gill & the 3.8lber had took the hook so the 6lber was'nt hooked.
thought i was in2 another double until is came 2 surface but a cracking fight, both came home & the old couple in my street were,nt bothered how they came in.

you put that hook out there to catch a fish and it did just that.

                            deffo a counter for me.
Just to add though, I think if yer foul hook a salmon or seatrout when river fishing it's got to be returned.
