  • New boy - second hand gear

    Afternoon

I\'m new to this forum and indeed sea angling. Went fishing off Largs (Ayr) recently and caught many mackerel, some coalfish and a cod! Enjoyed the experience and now would like to take up the \'sport\'. Probably mostly beach fishing – so i\'m after advice on any cheap or second hand gear. A good all-rounder rod and reel. I live in Glasgow and will probably fish up the west coast from Ayr to Mull / also around Fife on the east coast. Any advice on good beaches (marks) would also be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Hi mate and welcome, hope you enjoy your time with NESA.
A good starter set would be a Ron Thompson package where you get the rod and reel together and then progress from there, alot depends on your budget and how quickly you pick things up,have a look through one of the sea fishing mags to get an idea about whats available and of course post on here as much as you like for help, best of luck. What area do you come from ?
    Cheers Alan...

      Hi there

I live on the southside of Glasgow. There is a good tackle shop along the road from me and the proprietor has given me good advice and seems very helpful to newcomers (like myself). Just thought i\'d get some other opinions.

His shop also has a good sale – with some rods half price. Ron Thompson is a name i keep hearing – I will enquire next time i\'m in the shop.

      Cheers

You might grow out of the Ron Thompson kit quickly but its a good starter. Some of there higher range gear is excellent (axellerator rods),its just they seem to have a good range of starter combo deals.
        Cheers Alan...

                Cheers gents

It would seem I shouldn\'t go too far wrong with this site to help me. The GAC looks good – will pop in there soon. Will keep you posted on any joy/pain re the fishing.
Might need some help in selecting a rig etc.

                Thanks again
                Blenny

If you want some rigs done check out Ebay and search for rigs from Elite Rigs. Excellent quality and a good price. All quality components and will tailor them to suit what you want in terms of hooks etc.

A good lad who does a very professional job for shops as well.
