  • Sonik SK3

Fished Collywell Bay,Bottom of the ramp yesterday,1.30-5.30...NOWT.
What really spoiled the session was the damage done to my rod by a freak gust of wind.Whilst i was pouring a coffee, the rod stand & rod blew over.I know i probably should have been more carefull but you know how it is.Anyway when i picked the rod up,every ring was smashed to pieces......I know this is a budget priced rod & know the fittings arent as good quality as £200 -£400 priced rods, but i didnt think they would have damaged that easy.
Ive owend Century rods in the past,my last being a long ezze sport, that was fiited with Fuji rings.I must have dropped that rod loads of times, and it just took the punishment...never marked..
Proves the point you get what you pay for....
Anyway just wanted to warn any of you lads who own an SK3 to be very carefull with the rings...
Went back to sonik this morning cost me £35 for a new top section.Kept the old damaged one as well.
Might fancy getting it rerung with FUJI,S.
Be ok as a spare.Just a word of warning, hope i havnt put anyone off, this still a canny rod for the price, just a bit fragile for north east coast rock fishing.
The sk4 is a much stronger built rod, think i should have paid the extra,or even stuck with Century.....

Your not the first SK3 owner and no doubt you wont be the last to have this happen. There's one or two or three club members had the same problem with rings popping off. Fair enough no rods built to be dropped but as you say you get what you pay for its a case of buyers beware.

I have an Abu Suveron XP. This has Fuji eyes. Never really thought about it but heard Fuji eyes are good.
This is my second season with the rod and just found one of the porcelain inners has smashed so needs one new eye.
Think i will just drop into AMH angling at Annfield Plain normally costs a tenner. The lad in the shop just put two eyes on my old second abu rod.

My Nemesis Plus blew over twice in a couple of minutes on South Shields pier the other week, result two smashed rings. Had the tip ring smashed a couple of years ago, smae thing blew over and smashed on rocks. Can't complain they weren't designed for that.

Don't forget the unavoidable happens, we call them accidents.

Im going to have to diagree with most people on this subject.Yes we all accept that we may damage our rods whilst fishing the rock edges, scrape here cracked ring there, but every single ring after one tumble sorry but that is just crap design and crap components. They (anderson & co) are selling rods supposedly engineered for fishing the roughstuff and being damned good fisherman themselves they must know that these components are going to fail. I don't care if they are targeting the budget end of the market it's just plain wrong. A decent set of shock absorbing rings are not that expensive let's face it.

My Century WR300 blew over last Saturday, and crashed onto the Groyne. Smashed at least four rings (FUJI's) including the tip. So it isn't a problem with the Soniks, it can happen to any rod. It just depends how they fall.

my sk3 has been over on the rocks , pier and the car park with only a few minor scuffs so like the man says it must be the way they fall and land all the reviews Ive read state that the sk3 has got inferior rings compared to the sk4 when mine go I will just get it rerung with decent ones

Agreed, it depends on the wind speed, the pressure on the rod caused by the tension of the line, the height of fall etc. etc. I've damaged Fugi rings on a Century by having the rod blow over so to complain about the Sonik's rings is unfair IMO.

I would advise you to do an impartial test by buying a new Century and slamming it down hard onto rocks and then repeating the test with your Sonik and comparing the damage. Let us know the results of the test

I've seen the way a lot of people treat their rods and it does not surprise me when they get damaged...
