  • Abu 6500 Rocket Blue Yonder?

Anyone used one of these? Built in Sweden with an impressive 6.3:1 Retrieve and Mag brakes and look a nice reel too in blue and black

The old blue yonder were good reels in there day for clean ground distance fishing but the drag pressure is poor. If I was looking for a distance reel my money would go on the 7ht mag or the 7ht turbo

I have both of them and find them hard work with a decent fish on was just looking for the best of both worlds, Good casting and retrieve

The blue yonder is exactly the same all struggle under pressure. Something like a 515 mag2 fathom12 trq 12 all very good for 12-15lb line mate.

I don't know about this particular reel, but have had high-speed 6500 in the past and they just can't cope with anything like a 6:1 retrieve - even reeling in a flounder was hard work and had to be pumped.

Also, for "built in Sweden" read "made in China & shipped to Sweden where they put the handle on..." - that's all that's needed to qualify for a "Made in Sweden" badge.

I've had double figure double shots on my 7HT mags no problem (though I've upgraded the drags with Carbontex washers, which made a big difference) and they'd be my first choice - not too impressed with the Chen/Penns these days, although the smaller Fathoms seem better than the new mags. For a gutsy smaller reel they'd probably be my second choice.

                              Cheers Phil.

Looks very nice and I like the one piece cage. Horses for courses with the 6500s, I have them and find them ideal for beaches where no lifts are involved. I did my first smoothhound and ray fishing this year from beaches and my blue Elite performed perfectly.
Also I don't like the CTC3 Elite being called a Blue Yonder, that was a later far east made model, not a patch on the Elite.
