  • slosh30 v penn535

Cant decide which one. Both seem very similar.Ive only ever used ABUs in the past.,Just fancy a change.I know most of you use all three.....Are they more difficult to control than the ABU,s or the same.Even thought about the 535 mag.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

Someone told me they dont have any brake blocks fitted & they are prone to overuns if your not carefull...Can the spool tension be increased or brake blocks be added to slow the spool down until im used to it.

Got to be the Penn for me, I had abu's first then sloshes for years but switched last year to a penn 525 and wouldn't go back to daiwa or abu, the build quality is a different league with the penn.

They don't come supplied with the brakes fitted, but are supplied with a couple of sets in the box (large & small). If you're buying from a shop, no doubt they can fit them for you. I'd start with the 2 larger ones until you get used to the reel, but the amount of braking you'll need will also depend on how heavy the line is that you load it with and how full you fill the spool.

I use the SLX30sha's which have a free floating spool and run a bit faster, loaded with 30lb Big Game & run them on one small block, and on the SLX20sha I use 20lb line & again one block.

Whatever you do, don't use the spool tension knob as a brake - you should always have a tiny bit of side to side movement. Tighten any more and you can knacker the spindle.

Penn 535 Mag, Easy to cast with no nests on full mag, Good retrieval, Magnetic casting gives a bit more control.

I got the slosh30 on the advice of the forum, hadn't realised the brake blocks weren't fitted and were still in the bottom of the box at first, oops. Been well impressed with it and ended up picking up a slosh20 the other week aswell. Can't fault them, both very smooth, quick retrieves and feel very well put together.

Got a 535 mag...great solid built reel and has the added comfort of mag control.

I've got a slosh 20 , ABU 7000 and 2 Penns (535 mag and 525)...rate them all highly - I would say I prefer the Penn reels as better casting reels out of all them although the slosh is also a fave for ease of use and it's a great price

Got 2 slosh's 20 and 30 also an abu 7000 but no penn so i cant comment on how they compare. Only use the slosh and the abu is up for sale as it never sees the light of day.

If i had the money for the Penn i'd get it, i have a slosh20 and a 525 and i like them both but the penn is marginly better, but weather its better enough to justify the extra cost is debatable
