yes i agree, but our n.e fishing ports and fleets started in the past becouse only a few miles offshore they could litteraly bag up with the abundense of cod, they did't need to go to iceland, until they took almost everthing from the sea around our coast[and every where else]but we still have some thing of that legeacy with us today ,ie there is still a bigger biomass of cod living off our coast [scotland included]than any where else in the british isles.

East and North East Scotland. A hell of a lot more prolific.

      This is what you said...

for me the worst season in over 30 years by far]and thats from the most productive area in the u.k the n.e.coast.
As you say the NE coast, we all assume that you mean the northeast coast of England?

So why do the majority of trawlers head to the North North Sea and Iceland?

Yes, i go out alot. I've had 3 in the last 6-8 weeks but havent bothered much cos its a waste of time. I don't post my catches on here. I've had numerous blanks and the fishing has been awful! If yr that confident fish the club matches or opens and if yr lucky enough to catch A fish u will prob win! I know the top anglers are struggling badly and think its the worst sea fishing season there has ever been. Are u going to tell them theres plenty of fish around?! Cos if u were a top angler u wouldnt be posting a statement like that. Thats how bad its been.
im not arguing like but howay what do u put in a fishin mag in feb theres cod in the water doesnt mean theres cod up here alan yates henrey gilbey nd that there fishen the bristol channel not the tyne or the north east howay get a grip do you catch every cast because dont know if uve watched the program every chuck a fish now to me that just isnt real to me you can fish for weeks and have a blank they edit the program man

davey on the first quote, i did stipulate the U.K not england, and on the second quote i said the fishing fleet go n.n.w to iceland becouse there is nothing left in our north sea ,where at one time the cod fishing was as good as it gets, but if you look at the u.k as a whole the biggest biomass of cod [and i know its 90per cent down on what it used to be] , its still the biggest concentration of cod in the u.k.

north east coast of the uk.

I have seen some cracking, fooking huge cod on the divers cams and robotic operated vehicles when working offshore. Just a shame we cant fish for them

often get the trawlers just in the distance filling up with FASH lol

I packed in winter shore fishing and reading SA. I prefer float fishing for wrasse and pollack and spinning. I find the best way to learn anything about marks or tackle etc is to go fishing with someone who "knows" rather than try and find the answers in mags. There's forums all over the net like this one with loads of members willing to help if you want to fish their area

I dont know what all the fuss is about cod, you'd think it was the only species in the sea. I think it's mans hunter gather instinct to put food on the table why so many chase cod. People laugh at me when I tell them I returned all my catch and the "ha ha, the one that got away eh?" jibes just dont bother me. It seems your not a competent angler unless you return to your local after a sesh with a huge basket of cod, pffffftt

The only time the government will take any notice is when they're all gone and the comms are whinging for compensation. Let them take all the cod if they want, it's their funeral. After a few years of baronness and "Joe Public" being told the truth instead of watching their heroes on "Trawlermen" maybe there will be more protection when stocks reocover

Mirror copy of me there,i packe din winter fishing 2 years ago, happy to return everything i catch a si fish for sport not food and love the dappling on light gear for pollack close in sandeels on lures, mackerel on braid and spinners, floating fishing etc.

Only time cod bother me is when i am wrecking and thats because its about 50% of whats on the wrecks if not more.

I think in the next 2 years somethign will happen and the reason i feel it will be this quick is the pressure now monting from the EU will hurry up whatever they are working on at the moment.

When you think of how much it costs to buy, equip, crew, fuel, and the general running costs of a commercial fishing boat it would be madness for the banks to refund such a volatile industry if it collapsed

Let them rape the sea until their vessels are worthless, I think they've blown any chance of compensation with their claims that the sea is full of fish

If anglers adapt to other ways like spinning, fly and float fishing the pain wont be so bad if nature gives up trying to save cod and we can sit back and gloat and say "told you so"...................then go fishinng!

i dont think everyone just goes out to catch cod.

its just the idea of the chance of getting a big cod, lets face it, its probs the only decent species around this area that you will get to a big size.

And normally the prodominant species during the winter.

I gave up sea fishing ages ago, started fly fishing for salmon and trout. But just got the bug back again.

try to catch and release as much as possible when im not fishing a comp

I know your right mate, it just seems that way! TBH, I gave up winter cod fishing cos im crap at it and I work outdoors so once im back indoors it's hard to get me out again unless every tide has hungry fish with it like the good old days. I used to love the rock marks but my mountain goat days are over and most my fishing is from a boat in summer now
