The way i see fishing at the moment is i compare it with when i was about15yrs old to now-i am now nearly 48.
When i went fishing off the Middleton or the Heugh as a kid i remember all the old hands in the top corners pulling in cod left right and centre-i remember on old boy call Ronny. used to come up on a blue colour bike. Some older anglers on here will remember him
too. Used to pull in fish at 5lb all afternoon. Blokes even caught Cod off the side of the Heugh using scarborough reels.
I lost interest for a long time and have recently returned after fancying taking up the sport again.
In my opinion the cod have been decimated by over fishing-i know this by what i have seen. (I did fish a compo recently at Folkstone too) An example is Seaham yesterday-How can four rods fishing multiple baits for seven hours pull in one scraggy second hand tommy codling.
Another example is when i went out on my uncles boat as a lad. We even caught haddock then.
No the fishing is dire at the moment but i will still be back-i even found a straggler which avoided the nets at Steetly and broke my own record.
        Mick.
Personal best, 12.5lb Tope Scotland. 22/05/2012.

And that I suppose, is the Magazines fault - not that you were possibly not experienced enough or possibly tactfully unaware of how to find/catch the fish/ or maybe just unlucky - but the fish are out there - the North east coast is not the barren wilderness some would think it to be - maybe just maybe, not everyone who fishes or catches fish -posts the details on websites. Mmm an interesting thought.

I think if you look at the club catches across the North East this year as well as previous ones you will see a steep decline in fish being caught and not just cod. Yes lots of people don't post on websites, but go into your local tackle shop and I can guarantee you if a fish was caught in the locale the night before, the tackle shop owners know all about it. And the reports from them are thin on the ground also!
As I have said in another post, I was speaking to a match angler the other night who has won the Alnwick Sea Angling club, title many , many times, and he definitely thinks it's a barren wilderness, and I wouldn't say he's inexperienced or tactfully unaware!
The fish across the North East, seem to be in small shoals, that on one night or another can produce a canny bag for some, but these nights are few and far between and not being experienced by the VAST majority of anglers.
I gave up club fishing last year, but still take an interest in what the local lads are doing, mainly because the fishing was so poor. The ASAC fish the same time every week and most of the time conditions would be flat. This year I have ONLY gone out when there has been a decent sea, and have had 4 cod from 20 odd sessions.
"And I looked, and behold'a pale horse; and his name that sat on him was death, and hell followed with hi, and power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword and with hunger, and with the beasts of the earth"

I know when we moved to Hartley in the late 70's and dad used to take us to blyth harbour fishing it was rare not to catch anything and what we did catch was always a decent size, had nothing there now for years bar crabs and very tiny whiting/coalies.

Well there is still fish out there somewhere ,ya just got too be in the right place and the right time using the right bait and that bit of lady luck to go with it, even though we keep throwing a fortunes worth of bait in the sea every week ,we all keep going back out and doing it all over again, if we were catching fish everycast it would become boring and not a sport.

Sounds about right, as i say to our lass "If we caught fish every time, we'd call it catching!!"

i dont know why people start threads about sea angler, all it leads to is a bitch fest from most members on here and then people start having a go at a certain member. at the end of the day if you dont like the mag then dont buy it.

                          Who cares

sea angler, wsf, ego angler monthly, they're all a load of poo and incredibly patronising to anything thats not on the south coast, or anyone who doesn't manage to pull a zillion double figure fish in using some cotton, a bent pin and ear wax for bait, which you have of course managed to cast 8000 yards with ease, and can tie a leader not in your sleep whilst wearing anti-masturbation gloves

why argue, spend your money on something useful, better information to be hand on the internet IMHO.

If you want one to read, get a set of 12 months copies, and using a crayon change the year on each one to 2009 - you'll notice any difference

"best cod fishing for 37 minutes" or whatever is just a headline to make people pick it up, buy it, steal it, or come on a forum and argue about it, thus increasing brand awareness of the thing, and tempting people that gave up on it to go get a copy

                          Thought for the day:
Some people are like slinkies - not really good for anything but bring a smile to your face when thrown down the stairs

The point i was making Paul was that after the last issue with 'Best cod fishing for 50 years on the cover' after all the sh1t it caused and people wondering well, where in the north-east or most of the country is this happening Sea Angler has followed it up with 'Cod Boom we show u how'.....Yes, Drive 300miles down to Kent!

My mates have just started fishing. One has 2 codling size under his belt and the other has yet to catch a sizable fish. Both been out over 20 times each. They've been out with me and one of the north-easts best matchman. Imagine them reading that cover, cos it's disheartening and enough to put them off fishing thinking they're totally useless. Luckily we're telling them the truth and it's bloody hard going and u will have your day, fingers crossed!

Good luck down at seaham though, there should be a nice sea on and i hope u catch your 15 cod that u've been used too.
