  • Cod size limit, woeful.

Just been looking at club results and the fish being weighed in must be just size. Now I'm not against match fishing but the two fillets off a just size fish are utterly pointless IMO. For me having your name at the top of the pile and 10 or 20 in your pocket in these club matches means nothing. I think a major shake up in size limits is needed. I reiterate this is not a 'hate match fishing thread' as the size limits are the size limits, I just think weighing in small fish, as that's what they are in my eyes is uncalled for.
    Regards Nicky.

Get yourself to parliament if you want it changed until then anglers can and will keep legal size fish

I completely agree with you that size limits are woeful. Where I disagree, is that you go on to criticise anglers for obeying the rules.

It's like saying that a driver doing 29 miles an hour in a 30 mph zone is driving carelessly, or an angler who keeps 5 trout on a 6 trout ticket is somehow irresponsible.

There are enough people in this world quick to judge others who do wrong without adding to to it by criticizing those who follow the rules/laws.

I am not against keeping just sized fish. I do it myself when deep hooked!
What I really hate is when people fish matches, kill the fish to weigh in and then dump them. I don't fish matches, but have seen this quite a few times, especially in the Tyne when lads have a load of good Whiting and Coalies up to 2lb!
Surely they must know someone who would be grateful for some free fish!!

Emotive subject, but as Nicky said thats how it goes and until it changes.... Personally I will keep a cod that is a couple CM over size and I get a decent fillet from that fish - but thats not to say I agree with the current size limit, if theres somewhere I can put my name on a petition I would do so gladly

Surely nothing stopping clubs imposing a higher size limit of their own for a match, if they choose to do so.

You have to be careful taking a shot at those who are just obeying the rules, wrong as they may be

IncreAsing size limits to just match fisherman is penalizing the match fisher man, I don't agree with the size limit either a I think it should be at least 45cm and I beleive that the female cod spawning in jan feb and March should be put back to.

Your right about the match fishermen Phil.
Its just maybe they would all agree to an understanding that being responsible persons/anglers and presumably conservationists also that it would be in everyone’s best interests and take the moral high ground...of course if just one person disagreed then what can you do.

I guess what I'm saying is well done the man who puts back a size fish.

I'm sure most of us have seen someone put back a size fish and noticed the disgust of bystanders who would have kept said fish! Spongebob will tell you all about that!
