  • Penn supermag extra 525.

Bit of advice gents-was hoping to use my supermag for some heavyish ground but i have a problem. The reel is loaded with 15lb line at the moment and has a tapered 15-70lb leader-ideal for clear bottoms-however rubbish on anything heavier. I would however like to use the same reel on heavyish ground. Charlie had some 25lb new line which is 0.40 mil in diameter-cannot remember the name but its the new stuff like F1.
Is it worth getting this or would you buy something like an Okuma MG 3.0 LS.Then load this up.

    Mick.
ps does anyone use the new line on supermags.

I loaded up my 525's with the new Ultima Powersteel 22lb a few weeks ago but haven't had a chance to use it yet - I'm hoping to give it a go tonight, but it'll depend on where I end up fishing! I'm keen to see if it'll cope with mixed / snaggy ground, but don't anticipate using it in the kelp.

It's supposed to be super-tough - let's see how it compares to my usual 20lb Trilene. It's definitely slicker feeling and lower diameter, so I hope it'll be a good casting line too.

I've used F1 for a good few years now and have never had a problem with it (othr than its not the cheapest). Might just have to get some of this Powersteel stuff just for a try out as everything I've seen/heard about it suggests it the dogs danglies.

Well, just got back after trying out the Powersteel on my supermag. It performs great, casts very nicely - unfortunately I didn't get any fast holds tonight to test it's "pulling power". Also managed to give it a couple of chucks on the beach where I was able to really spank it - the reel (brimful) holds just enough line (had a big bow in the tide as well); I can't recall the diameter but had about 20 yds left on so I'd say it's about as thick as I'd want to put on a 525. I hope they bring it out in 30lb, I'd like to try that on my Saltists!
