2 schools of thought on this one; go down by the prom at the rex, and walk all the way along the pipe. The other (and my preferred way) is to go down the ramp onto the prom which overlooks the pipe, down the rather broken steps and cut across the rocks.....fishin' accomplished......

Tony, you can get you car down to the steps (at night!, might get wrong during the day) as GF says this is the quickest way. If I take the bairn spinning in the summer I go the long way as its like walking along a path. Note. If you fishing on the flood the tide comes in behind youTides & Sea State For North Shields

just make sure you keep a toot on the tide! it very easy to get cut off.
i personally wont go there if there is any kind of sea running, the waves can come out of nowhere and bray off the pipe taking you with it.
can be a cracking mark at times

If there is a bit of a sea on, the skeers right opposite the steps down can fish very well (knick-named Codger's Corner) - just a short chuck is best, no more than 50 yds, and often a lot shorter. Once over the ledges just in front of you you're onto sandy bottom, but watch those ledges when bringing fish in - I lost what I'm sure would have been my best shore-caught fish there Boxing Day night (had to be in the region of 20lb) when the fish cut my hooklength on the rocks right at my feet. I'm sure they heard me cursing on St Mary's!....fishin' accomplished......

i have seen and heard of many big fish from around the pipe area. I have only had small codling there. i was fishing along side a guy one night and we were using the same bait and doing the same thing, that jammy git had 2 8lb cod and a few smaller ones
same with newbiggin west end pipe, cracking mark and can hold some canny lunkers.

It's a popular mark for comps as you'll usually get something, even if it's just a few Scotchies, but the last couple of time's I've been down it's been pretty dire. It definitely fishes best with a bit of movement and everyone seems to have their favourite spot - personally I like the very end, chucking almost straight off, but a little to the left. Too straight and you're into suicide territory! If you're really desperate you can chuck off the end to the right, into thick kelp, but you're probably saying goodbye to your gear!....fishin' accomplished......
