What's Hartley Skeer like for snags/tackle losses?
I've fished the bay at the base of the stairs on a high tide a couple of times but thought I might give the skeer a shot on the low tide at the w/end.
You can lose quite a bit from there Lee, lots of snags and Kelp but always the chance of a decent Cod. I used to fish there quite a bit years ago and had a few decent catches. Not a bad mark for getting on and off either.
Jim.
Remember, some people are alive simply because it is illegal to shoot them.
you really need to fish it on a big southerly and then you might get some good results fished there a few times and its a great shot over low water

It fishes well on a big north easterley too, its rarely unfishable. If you fish the bottom end (stairs end) of the gully you can gets lots of loose weed in a big sea and it can seem unfishable, just move a 50yds or so and you can usually escape it .
Its a heavy mark so be prepared to fish heavy gear 30-40lb mainline 40 -50lb hooklengths 4/0s an a big heavy 6-7oz gripper, theres lots of kelp close in with some wicked ledges. Ive had most of my best bags following the tide back up the skeer casting behind the swells. It seems to fish best when you can see the actual current streaming out of the middle of the gully, a cast of 70 or more yds and your normally into it.
Nows a good time as it does throw up some piggies.
