Yup, They did a good job on their relationship with the Norwegians on that one. Apparently there were a load of abusive posts on Norwegian forums toward the Scots fishing fleet.

Yer its a shocker, i just hope a nice shoal of cod wil be feeding on them below and then swin straight for the Northeast cost looking on the bright side abit that i think.

We all know it happens just still a killer when you see it.

I was told they did this but hoped it wasn't true. I can't understand why they (the trawler men) are doing it. Its only going to ruin it for themselves following these actions....but like many, everything is about money NOW and they prob think they'll not be doing this in 5-10years time so it won't affect them. Its no wonder the fishings terrible!

to me just another reason we shouldn't be listening to the EU, by putting a quota stops trawler company expanding by stopping the flow of money, i feel sorry for all the trawler men out there who have to throw back fish its literally watching money go down the drain, I understand over fishing but its not a matter for the EU to decide, this law doesn't stop overfishing, just over selling in reality and the fish are still dead so its just wasted

The reason (I'm guessing) they're throwing back the fish is because of high-grading and low-grading of fish...the fish they've lobbed back are less profitable than the ones they ended up keeping...videos like this tho do their cause no good it must be said; the prob is it'll end up with a carpet ban on all fishing in certain areas before long as eventually the fisheries will fall below sustainable levels

I was told that once they have there quota they carry on fishing for nicer fish for (2-3lb) fillets. If they get a net full they dump the smaller and bigger cod. Thats what i've been told, not cos they're catching to much.

Are u sure? Can u prove that? Is there some sort of device on the boat that tells people when the quota has been reached at headquaters? I liken it to fly fishing for trout, u catch yr quota (limit) early say after an hour but u may carry on fishing to see what else is there. Even though u shouldnt. I don't go fly fishing by the way!

a very tiny minority may do, most don't as it's costs them too much. The xtra they may make by landing bigger fish, they sharp lose with the price of the fuel. Some of th guys I know, with boats in the 65 to 75' range, are burning 10000 litres of fuel in a 5 day trip, and extra day towing to try to get better fish is going to cost them another grand or 2 in running cost, the price difference between smaller fish and bigger ones is not that huge. Most of the buyers operate something of a monopoly

Considering how hard to come by cod are supposed to be, this morning prices at peterhead we're as low as £1 per kilo for A5 cod, which are basically those that just in size, the better fish - A3 cod, usually between 5 and 10lb fish was as low as £1.50 a kilo, and the A1's which are the prime 10lb plus fish was as low as £1.80 a kilo

to make back a grand's worth of diesel burnt they'd have to find a lot more bigger fish, and if the gamble don't pay off, they can be out of pocket, and have lost some of their days at sea

shocking when you think that tesco's will be wanting getting on for a tenner a Kilo for cod retail, yet as one of the biggest buyers they won't pay more than a quid or so for it, some profit margin that is

FWIW, this mornings Coley price was 60p a kilo! and haddock was as low as 55p
