Lugworm on it's day, it will fish better than any other bait you can name. I used to start off with a Lug and Rag bait and then try other cocktails after that. Fishing the beach if there were fish about, Lug by itself would be the better bait. Sometimes with mussel sometimes with Razor but always Lugworm. On the pier, the best combination I used on there would be Lug with Razor. Nothing else ever came close, now and again with Mussel but it was never as consistant as Lug and Razor.

mackeral is a super bait in combo with lug or rag, it's its own advert when it stinks!
i always have a box with macks, squid and mussels in the freezer ready, it will last for a coupla trips, especially as it don't thaw out fully in these wintery conditions!gettin a rod for wor lass, should be a good swap!

I buy 8ounces rag for £8 and a bag of razer for £2:50. Also Usually have a half doz frozen squid. Plus some mackeral frozen. Not really fussed about lug but i have bought frozen runny-usually £4 for ten -this does not go as far as the ragworm.Personal best, 12.5lb Tope Scotland. 22/05/2012.

I have had some canny results with Runny on the pier Mick, I would'nt fish Blyth beach with Rag instead of Lug though unless I was after flatties or maybe the odd Bass. That said though I have picked up both at times on just Lug.

Rag does it for me.
I haven't been out this winter but two years ago I had 11 fish off Blyth beach in about 3 hours, I kept seven and returned 4, nearly all were cod, all caught on nothing but rag as that's the only bait I could lay my hands on that day.
IMO I would not fish with maccy if I'm after cod just lots of juicy lug or rag and a bit of razor.
Having said that I don't honestly think a good sized cod will turn it's nose up at anything, if they are hungry, and they nearly always are, they will take anything. I just think nice juicy worms get a good scent out for them to follow. Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that who cares?... He's a mile away and you've got his shoes!
