  • Rod building advice!!!!!

I'm wondering if any of you rod builders have tried this or seen it done?
Basically rebuilding an old uglystik boat rod which was very tatty
An old friend of mine who sadly is no longer with us used to varnish the blank & apply big glitter flakes to the wet varnish then revarnished over once it had dried,
He managed to get the glitter evenly sprinkled & not overloaded with glitter.
I've tried & tried & sick of rubbing down but I just can't get it evenly sprinkled like he did. His looked professional mine looks sh**e
    Any tips?

Tony, how are you applying the flakes.

    What varnish are you using.
If people think you are an idiot, why speak and remove all doubt !

I'm using clear coat x varnish from hopkins & holloway
Iv managed to get some larger glitter flakes & enlarged holes on a pepper plastic tub.
Iv tried gently tapping at a height of 600mm ish with rod in a rod turner but is too sparse, tried closer to the blank & it then goes too heavy & patchy in places.
Tried sprinkling with fingers (like a pinch of salt) & still no good,
I'm prob being fussy but know the look I'm wanting to achieve just can't achieve it!!

          Tony,

Put some of your varnish into another container and add glitter and mix well.

Apply with brush, stir varnish before dipping brush into varnish.

depending on the size of the glitter flakes you may need to finish with a light coat of clear varnish.

Had a go tonight. Definitely the best attempt I've had upto now but still not quite what I had in mind,
I think more practice will get the technique right
