Help for a Left Hander

First time ever on here so if this is in an innappropriate section then sorry. Just about to start sea fishing but I am left handed, I would like a rough ground rig a clean shore rig and maybe a light spinning/lure rig for the surf. Anyone left handed have any ideas about the best reels available, the multipliers in particular seem a problem. Whats the best out there please. Any help would seriously unscramble my brain!!!

Cheers everyone I will try a right handed reel, seems to be what the consensus is. If I knew how to delete this thread I would to stop the site getting clogged up!! Over to you Willywetegg, and thanks again everyone

Hi mate and welcome to NESA, I would expect there will be a few left handers that will reply to your question. I would imagine that your only problem would be the reel? Have a talk with a few tackle shop owners, no need to buy straight away, ask them what they reccomend and if the same things come up then you have a clue. Have you any mates that fish that will give you a go of their gear? That is one of the best ways. My cousin is left handed and he used my gear as well as his own without any problem, then again, he had a casting style that I have never seen anyone else ever do lol.

The majority of fixed spools can be switched left to right, the handle simply unscrews and swaps sides.

im left handed and i can use right handed multipliers quite easily, when i first started fishing with a fixed spool i had the handle on the left and when i decided it was time to learn how to use a multiplier i went with the right handed model, its not as hard as you would think, after only a month or so i had it down to a t.

being a lefty tony,do you cast over your right shoulder like most righty's do or over ya left shoulder? if over ya left does the reel handle bother you, being close to ya noggin, if you catch my drift

I`m a lefty too,never tried a left handed reel though.i cast over my right shoulder.i know abu have a few in their range both in the 6500 size reels and you can get the 7000 size too in left hand.

For whatever reason, sea anglers use fixed spool reels with the handle on the right if they are right handed, freshwater this isn't the case as a rule most anglers who are right handed have the handle on the left.
Food for thought

I'd suggest trying a right handed multiplier even if left handed seeing how it feels, borrow one or have a go of a friends (who will be understanding if you nest it lol ).

i cast over my right shoulder, the lads i used to fish with years ago were all right handers so when i wanted to learn how to use a multiplier i just copied off them. its like most things in life keep trying and you'll get there in the end.

Yep, and if you're just starting, everything will feel a bit awkward anyway, so don't worry about reels being right-handed or left-handed – just think of them as reels that you'll get used to. By far the majority of anglers use a multiplier on top of the rod with the handle on the right and I'd suggest you do the same. I've never quite figured out whether it would be more appropriate to think of that as the right-handed or left-handed way of doing things, but it's what most do, so unless you want a complicated (and more expensive) life, I'd suggest at least giving that a go first!

I'm left handed and my first reel was a sl30sh in right handed guise. At first it felt a bit weird and uncomfortable to reel in with my right hand but after about 3 days it felt totally normal and very easy. Now if I try to use my left hand to reel it feels very odd indeed. I would advise getting a right handed reel and learning to use it, it will save you a lot of fuss looking for left handed reels in the future.

that's because it's easier to cast lighter rods in the "stronger" hand...tend to cast one handed with Coarse rods or spinning rods...at least that's what I have found

Left hander

I am a left hander and cast over the left shoulder. However I still have the reel handle on the right hand side whether it be fixed spool or multiplier. As someone mentioned earlier you will master reeling in with your right hand very quickly if you do not opt for a left handed reel. Have tried using being left handed as an excuse for not catching much but nobody accepts this lol!
