  • What Type of Flatfish ?

    Hopefully the image has attached.

I caught the offend flatfish today from ssp. At first I thought it was a flounder, but noticed the green colour and tinge, it also has some bright red marks, not plaice orange. (these are in the pigment of the skin). It looks like a Harris Tweed colour. Also there was no discernible lateral line on either side. Underside was normal white

Anybody got any ideas, is it a species or a hybrid or deformed fish.

Suggestions received already, its a Scottish Flounder, its been on the hook so long its mouldy.

Looks like a dab, I've had them like that before off ssp, the colour has something to do with spawning - they go like that when they're spawning or after they've spawned or something like that!

Looks like a dab shape to me despite the colour.... Intersting one though!

It's a Dab mate, probably spawned had quite a few that colour over the years ,long rough dabs have a mouth like a turbot that opens from the side and a decent set of teeth.

It's a Dab. I have caught a few like that in the Tyne. Usually at the Ice house or the Walkway though.
The Long Rough Dab has a large mouth and the dorsal fin starts at the eye.

Thanks all for your replies and info.
It seems conclusive from your replies that it is a dab.

definately a dab, i've had hundreds of them like that over the years. i believe they are males after spawning because most this colour are thin and in poor condition. i've never caught one of the larger spawning females this colour.

a long rough dab has a straight lateral line and teeth.
