Dead porbeagle

Was at N/S fish quay today and outside a fish shop, on display was a nice big and very dead porbeagle.

What i want to know is why was it not put back alive?
Was it already dead when it was brought onboard the boat??
Does anyone actually eat these fish??
Are they worth a lot of money???
I could ask a load more questions but I wont.

Needless to say i dont understand why this fish was killed. Can anybody tell me the reasons behind it???

Well I wouldn't eat shark that's for sure - they store their urea (pee) in their blood, when they die it ends up in their flesh.. So when you're eating shark meat you're also ingesting shark urine.. nice..

I posted a pic of the head of one outside a shop on the quay last year, I think the skipper at the time said it was caught up in his nets so he had to kill it.

They were selling steaks inside the shop, very tasty apparently & no doubt very profitable for the shop.

they are normally dead when caught after being in a net for a while
and yes they are very tasty, must be thier pee that gives it that lovely porky taste, better than all the chemicals pumped into some of the food we eat, much more tender than pork, grandson loves it.
been a few on the quay of late.

yup, they do taste nice. not what you'd expect and a bit hard to describe really, very 'meaty' and not that fishy

So the fish was still alive and he killed it then.....nice!!

I am not against eating these fish if they are brought on board dead as I dont see the point of throwing the fish back and letting it go to waste.
I also apprieciate everyone has to make a living and I'm sure the boat got a canny price for it. I also beleive if it's in size no matter what fish, if you caught it then you can do with as you please.

But this is the thing that gets me. Read that story in the chronicle again and pay attention to the second to last paragraph. Just in case you miss it here it is for you.

"The shark is considered vulnerable to extinction, and the European Union has proposed listing it as an endangered species under the United Nations Convention on International Trade."

In my opnion it should have been put back. The skipper had to kill it, so it was obviously alive. Another opinion of mine is if they taste klike pork, then why not just go and buy some pork???

Fully agree mate, they're not a sustainable species so we should be doing our best not to take them whenever possible.
