  • Help sorting abu 6500's

I have 2 abu 6500's which are my favourite reels. Today i used them both and they both seem to have the same problem, both are casting fine but are screaming a bit on the cast. While both reels are quite old neither have been heavily used or abused.

The first is a 6500ct (black one) which was a limited edition when i got it about 15 or so years ago. I hadnt used it for a few years but last night i oiled it up and loaded it with 12lb line to try today. Like i said its casting ok,running fairly smoothly but is making a racket on the cast.

The second is a 6500 mag elite (green one) which i have had maybe 8 to 10 years i have used this one more recently and it has always cast a dream. Now again its casting fine but is making a racket on the cast.

Has anyone got any idea what the issue might be or how to sort it?

Sounds like it could be the bearings to me.

wash bearings in lighter fluid, dry off and relube, try again, might be your oils a touch thin and bearings are slightly worn

Agreed. If problem persists seek servicing or man in the know.

Two things that I find make my Mag Elite howl a bit is if the spool isn't balanced correctly (did you check it when you loaded up with new line) and/or there's too much end float. Either can cause too much vibration.
Have you done anything to the Mag Elite since you last used it when it was running ok, ie stripped it down, put new line on etc.

Ok, i have ordered some new ceramic bearings, will try them in one of the reels and see how it goes, if its ok will get some for the other one.

Ian if it does not work give em to me and i,ll drop them in Gents tackle shop at Hartlepool. Lad on the pier said they are reasonable for servicing.

                    Cheers Mick.

if push comes to shove the best guy i know for sorting abu reels out is pete coogan, only problem hes on mereseyside so would mean posting them to him, if its an abu and pete cannot sort it then no one can

not sure of petes phone number now but he can normally be contacted through this site The Fisherman's Cove :: Index - sorry if this breaks any rules

Yes, that's the mobile number I've got for Pete too. Top guy, certainly knows his stuff, helped me out with my Gold 6500 earlier this year.
