  • best cod rigs for the winter season

I always use a self made, bog standard paternosta clipped down pennel rig, with the hook snood about two and half feet long loaded with size 4,0 or even 5,0 hooks, and have cought plenty of cod with them. There are loads of other different types of rigs you can use, but are any of them better than the one i,m using every time i,m cod fishing.

Couldn't advise on one rig, totally dependant on the mark in my opinion.

I would be the same as Steve most times when Cod fishing. Why??? because it is a good rig and cuts down on tackle losses, especially when fishing rough ground. If I was scratching for Whiting which I very rarely do I would use some kind of flapper usually two hooks about 1/0 0r 2/0.

Ive just made a load of pennel pully's today, also made some 2 hook 1/0 flappers just in case.

Also went down the fish quay and myself some squid and mussels. Going to give them a try tomorrow.

              rigs

rock marks require a plain blood loop about 2ft above sinker with 4 ft hook snood. beaches 2 hook flapper with long hook snoods.

Pennel pully also but with a selection of hook sizes and types with snoods from 12inches upwards.
Again to try to be ready for all condations.

What's the best way of tying a pulley rig so that when it's clipped in the impact shield or whatever you're using it's an equal length?? Mine always seem to end up with a hook length too short, resulting in it taking the weight and not the rig body. If that makes sense!!

Maybe I'm just confusing myself!! Last time I tried making one was when I was about 16.

The " Sea Anglers guide to bait and rigs" i found was great when i got back into fishing and even just to thumb through and try new ideas.

I agree with Nodrog (Gordon?) on this one.

There's no such thing as the perfect Cod rig. It totally depends on the type of venue you are fishing.
If you're happy with the rigs you are using stick with them 'cos no doubt if you change you will loss the fish of a lifetime and end up blaming the new rig.

summer or winter no mater what fish im looking to catch i only use pennel pully rigs
i find 2/3 hook paternoster rigs ect end up in a tangle and i hate waiting and picking the knots out .
pennel pully rigs are easy to unwind in a tangle

And i just make a few with smaller hooks or make some with a single hook i like to use mustard vikings 3/0 for cod rigs and mustard power worm 2/0 for whitings
i always make it pennel pully tho to me its easy to make and stops alot of tangles

each to there own i guess
