Sl30sh spool rubbing?!

I have just acquired an old sl30sh from my dad who had 3. I got it because there is a grinding sound when turning the handle. I initially thought that the bearings would be shot but after opening it up the insides look brand new.
After a little closer inspection I've worked out the problem is the spool catching on the casing of the reel. There is no play on the spool when it's all back together so I'm a little stumped. I'm guessing the spool spindle could be bent slightly but it's not obviously if it is. Has anyone encountered this before and what's the solution? I had though about taking a fraction of the spool rim but am unsure if this would cause other issues, any ideas?

If spindle is bent bud you should feel it when you cast, ie spool judder??

Spongebob cheers for that, it sounds like it is not that then as it casts free as a bird. It's just when your reeling in it sounded like a grinding but as I said I've pinned it down to the spool rubbing. The tighter the cast control cap is wound in the worse it sounds.

Sounds like you need some brass shims in the end cap or replace the old ones.

Have you checked the drive shaft bearing? The little bearing behind the metal plate? ?

Sounds like play in the spool bearings they seem fine until under load ie reeling in

Enduro, it does it even when there's no load, just spinning the handle.

Is the spool edge or cage corroded?

Nope spool and cage or spot on. This is why I'm stuck because the insides look brand new the bearings and nice and shiny washers look good, everything seems fine but obviously isn't. I'm think a new bearing and washer kit but don't want to shell out £20 or so if it doesn't fix it. Would care I've got a mate who works in a bearing factory but they work in odd sizes with letters and numbers rather than just the size in mm's.

New spool bearings. Brass shims for the end cap and don't tighten the end cap up too much. Spool should have slight play left and right.

Check the end cap for the shims !

Forgive my stupidity but is the end cap the actual side of the reel, or the cap for the cast control knob?

The cap for spool tension or cast control, there should be some thin square brass or copper shims in it.
